On April 8th, Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a significant upgrade for the PlayStation 5 Pro. This free update will enhance both the graphics and performance of the game for players who already own it. The upgrade utilizes the PlayStation 5 Pro’s advanced technology, like PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), and its more powerful hardware to deliver a better gaming experience. Cyberpunk 2077 has been consistently improved since its release, and this update demonstrates how developers can continue to optimize games for newer consoles.
Sony has improved the visual quality and performance of games using its new AI-powered PSSR 2 upscaling technology. Announced last month, PSSR 2 is already being used in games like Resident Evil Requiem and Crimson Desert. This upgraded technology makes images clearer and more stable, all while keeping frame rates high. Cyberpunk 2077, with its detailed and complex world, is a great example of a game that benefits from this visual enhancement.
Night City is Getting an Impressive Upgrade
Kuba Knapik, the Global Art Director at CD Projekt Red, announced details about an upcoming visual improvement for Cyberpunk 2077. The update will be available on April 8th. CD Projekt Red is enhancing the game’s graphics using a technology called PSSR 2 and also implementing BVH8, which will make ray tracing perform better.
Ray tracing enhances the lighting, shadows, and reflections in Night City, making the game look more realistic. The developers at CD Projekt Red explained that these improvements help bring their vision for the city to life. Although they’ve stated there won’t be any new story content for Cyberpunk 2077, they continue to support the game and its players.
The game will not only look significantly better, but players will also have three ways to optimize performance. “Ray Tracing Pro” delivers the most detailed graphics with features like enhanced reflections and lighting, targeting 40 frames per second (FPS) on VRR-compatible displays or 30 FPS on others. “Performance mode” prioritizes the highest possible frame rates, potentially reaching up to 90 FPS on VRR displays. “Ray Tracing mode” offers a balance between visual quality and speed, enabling select ray tracing features while aiming for a smooth 60 FPS. This update is likely to be the last major improvement for this game, as the developers at CD Projekt Red are now focusing on their upcoming titles, Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4.

This visual update is a great illustration of how games can get better over time with new hardware, even long after they first came out. Updates like this prove developers can keep supporting popular games and improve them for everyone – both those who are new and those who have been playing for a while – especially as technologies like PSSR become more common on PlayStation.
