Being a fan who has been part of the Pokémon series ever since it was introduced in the U.S., I’ve developed quite an attachment to these games over time.
Overall, despite some fluctuations, I’ve generally remained an enthusiastic supporter of this imaginative pet-gathering endeavor.
By any chance, are you fond of dinosaurs too? After all, who wouldn’t be captivated by the idea of colossal, thundering reptiles ruling our world? So, isn’t it intriguing to blend this ancient fascination with the timeless appeal of collecting creatures?
In other words, while I do enjoy the show, I wouldn’t categorize myself as a dedicated competitor. I wouldn’t label myself as a novice either; instead, I find myself somewhere between these two extremes.
As a gamer, I don’t get caught up in chasing numbers; instead, I enjoy crafting a versatile team of creatures that can handle any situation thrown at them, making my gaming experience more dynamic and engaging.
Here’s the way I plan to sort these dinosaur-type Pokémon: Taking into account their variety of moves and their commitment to embodying a fearsome prehistoric creature. Additionally, I’ll consider how vulnerable they are to powerful attacks that exploit their specific weaknesses.
29. Amaura
Ice, Ice, Baby
First Appears In | Generation VI |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Ice |
Cool Egg Move | Discharge |
Final Move | Hyper Beam |
Weaknesses | Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Rock, Steel |
Isn’t everyone fond of the classic, elongated neck Pokemon, isn’t it? This ancient, icy elegant creature serves as an outstanding illustration of the numerous fantastic dinosaur-like Pokemons featured within the series.
In the past, I’ve appreciated Pokemon with Ice and Rock types, but the issue with combining these two types is that they become strikingly vulnerable to Fighting and Steel-based attacks.
4 times the usual damage nearly ensures defeat in any encounter, plus it has four additional vulnerabilities to water, grass, ground, and rock types.
If you appreciate a character with powerful Special Attacks but less overall durability, you might find this icy creature appealing. However, there are other dinosaurs in this collection that offer both strength and durability.
28. Aurorus
The Ice Age Is Nigh

First Appears In | Generation VI |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Ice |
Cool Tutor Move | Meteor Beam |
Final Move | Hyper Beam |
Weaknesses | Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Rock, Steel |
Typically, the rewards from evolving a Pokémon are typically valuable compared to the time and energy invested in their level-up process. Aurorus is no different in this regard.
Regrettably, it remains a type that is vulnerable to Fighting and Steel moves, much like the fragile Amaura.
Thankfully, the threshold for Special Attack is much higher for the big guy.
With abilities such as Meteor Beam and Hyper Beam for offense, and protective shields like Light Screen, Safeguard, and Reflect, what you possess is quite a formidable defensive powerhouse, or in simpler terms, a character with high defense but low attack, often referred to as a “glass tank.
A significant disadvantage I often encounter is that Aurorus has limited versatility in learning various attack types. Consequently, it may struggle to handle a diverse range of Pokémon effectively.
27. Omanyte
Cthulhu Square Pants

First Appears In | Generation I |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Water |
Cool Egg Move | Toxic Spikes |
Final Move | Hydro Pump |
Weaknesses | Electric, Grass, Fighting, Ground |
Although Omanyte isn’t significantly stronger than Amaura or Aurorus, it does have a decent level of durability, making it slightly more robust in comparison.
Additionally, he’s recognized for being among the earliest fossil Pokémon from prehistory within the series, making it quite intriguing.
Back in the day, even before its evolution, I’ve always found Omanyte to pack quite a punch with its Special Attack. It’s got this knack for learning an impressive array of moves, from the gritty Mud Shot, the corrosive Brine, all the way to Ancient Power.
Apart from being quite skilled, he can master techniques like Rain Dance, Protect, and Ice Beam in the game.
In other words, the small character finds it difficult to handle attacks from Grass-type Pokémon, and also struggles against Electric, Fighting, and Ground types.
26. Omastar
Prehistoric Superstar

First Appears In | Generation I |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Water |
Cool Egg Move | Haze |
Final Move | Hydro Pump |
Weaknesses | Electric, Grass, Fighting, Ground |
If you loved Omanyte, you’ll adore Omastar.
Despite not being the most aesthetically pleasing Pokémon, he boasts a robust Defense rating, a commendable Special Attack, and an array of adaptable moves that he can master.
Despite having a less impressive Attack stat, Omastar is capable of learning cunning physical attacks such as Rock Tomb, Steal, and Giga Impact.
In essence, you’ll primarily depend on strong special moves such as Hydro Pump and others to assert your dominance over your adversary.
Or even more casually: You’re going to need some heavy-hitting special attacks like Hydro Pump to show your opponent who’s boss.
25. Shieldon
Little Barrier Boy

First Appears In | Generation IV |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Steel |
Cool Egg Move | Fissure |
Final Move | Heavy Slam |
Weaknesses | Water, Fighting, Ground |
Frankly, you wouldn’t choose a Pokémon with a shield-like face primarily for its attacking abilities. As Game Freak made clear, the focus of this creature is more geared towards something else.
Speaking of which, if you’re on the hunt for a robust small obstacle, Shieldon – an ancient Pokémon – could well be your choice!
Even pre-evolution, both Defense and Special Defense are pretty rock solid.
As a dedicated Pokémon trainer, I must admit that I’ve come across a remarkable Pokémon with just three vulnerabilities. However, the challenge lies in the fact that two of these weaknesses are 4x vulnerabilities. This means that my trusty shield can be swiftly eliminated by both Fighting and Ground attacks, making strategy a crucial factor in my battles.
24. Bastiodon
Bastion Of Defense

First Appears In | Generation IV |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Steel |
Cool TM Move | Avalanche |
Final Move | Heavy Slam |
Weaknesses | Water, Fighting, Ground |
Even though Bastiodon doesn’t significantly boost its attack statistics compared to Shieldon, it excels remarkably in defense.
Reaching your peak ability could lead to a character boasting almost 500 Defense and over 400 Special Defense, which is quite astonishing.
But since I never worry about EVs all that much, I usually get one closer to 250 and 200.
Despite its inconsistent energy output, Bastiodon adopts sly tactics to throw off your competition.
Some key examples are Foul Play and Reflect, as well as Flash Cannon and Substitute.
23. Swinub
Chunky Lil’ Porker

First Appears In | Generation II |
---|---|
Type | Ice / Ground |
Cool Egg Move | Double Edge |
Final Move | Blizzard |
Weaknesses | Fire, Water, Grass, Fighting, Steel |
In theory, Swinub might not seem like a creature from prehistory. However, it’s safe to say that its final form certainly embodies the essence of a prehistoric Pokémon, even if not entirely in terms of its physical makeup.
So we had to add the little guy to the list.
Apart from being cute, this tiny Ice or Ground Pokémon has average statistics. Fortunately, it compensates for that to some extent with useful skills like Oblivious and Snow Cloak.
Before it becomes more powerful through evolution, Swinub can already learn some useful moves such as Ice Fang, Trailblaze, and even Stealth Rock.
22. Piloswine
Cold And Fluffy

First Appears In | Generation II |
---|---|
Type | Ice / Ground |
Cool TM Move | Sleep Talk |
Final Move | Thrash |
Weaknesses | Fire, Water, Grass, Fighting, Steel |
With Piloswine, we can start to see the final potential for the evolutionary line.
It also doesn’t hurt how adorably silly the large pig looks with its fluffy coat.
For this particular Pokémon, enhanced abilities provide a boost, particularly in the Attack department. This allows it to fully leverage stronger attacks such as Take Down, Ice Fang, Rock Tomb, and Avalanche.
It’s nearly there, but we’ll catch up with Mamoswine later on this particular list!
21. Kabuto
Prelude To Greatness

First Appears In | Generation I |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Water |
Cool Egg Move | Mud Shot |
Final Move | Stone Edge |
Weaknesses | Electric, Grass, Fighting, Ground |
Being among the initial players who embarked on the journey with Red and Blue versions, I didn’t find Kabuto particularly captivating upon our initial encounter.
He’s a weird little fella that looks like a bug, but is actually a Rock/Water type?
At first glance, Kabuto appears as if it’s not worth the fossil it was found in. Apart from Defense and Offense, its stats are rather ordinary.
However, it’s likely familiar that good outcomes arrive for patient individuals. Let’s dive into the advanced version of Kabuto now!
20. Kabutops
Shellfish Reaper

First Appears In | Generation I |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Water |
Cool Egg Move | Icy Wind |
Final Move | Stone Edge |
Weaknesses | Electric, Grass, Fighting, Ground |
Kabutops far exceeds what we might have expected the first time we encountered Kabuto.
Not only is this Pokémon strong with wicked scythe arms, but it has pretty good Defense as well.
As a gamer, what really blew me away with this advanced fossil Pokémon is the massive collection of diverse moves it can master!
These range from Aqua Jet and Leech Life to Brick Break, Aerial Ace, and even Rock Slide.
The Kabutops is remarkably potent, resembling a Swiss Army knife, but its strength is limited due to its complete vulnerability against strong attacks originating from the Grass type.
19. Tropius
Chiquita Banana

First Appears In | Generation III |
---|---|
Type | Grass / Flying |
Cool Egg Move | Dragon Dance |
Final Move | Solar Beam |
Weaknesses | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Rock |
One challenge I faced when creating this list was clearly identifying which Pokémons could be considered dinosaur-like. Some are quite evident, but others need a bit of evaluation to confirm their dinosaur-like nature.
Despite the fact that Tropius isn’t called a dinosaur, I personally consider its long neck and fruit-bearing nature to be characteristics of a dinosaur.
This Brontosaurus character inexplicably developed a penchant for eating an excessive amount of fruit and began producing it instead of consuming it, which is rather peculiar even by Pokémon standards. Yet, this unique Grass/Flying creature remains quite entertaining.
Not only can Tropius learn a variety of different moves, but it has pretty solid stats overall.
This player isn’t groundbreaking, but they add a reliable strength to any squad. However, beware if the opposing team prefers Ice types.
18. Archen
Polly Wants To Fly

First Appears In | Generation V |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Flying |
Cool Egg Move | Switcheroo |
Final Move | Endeavor |
Weaknesses | Water, Electric, Ice, Rock, Steel |
Even though I often suspend my skepticism when playing Pokemon games, it must be challenging for Rock/Flyers, as they possess wings yet are too heavy to actually fly.
This Pokémon, Archen, doesn’t appear higher up in the list due to a significant factor. However, it is worth noting that it has a vibrant appearance and knows some entertaining moves.
What stands out most are moves like U-Turn, Crunch, and Dragon Claw. If you primarily use physical attacks, you should find this old ancestor quite manageable.
17. Archeops
Ostrich Energy

First Appears In | Generation V |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Flying |
Cool Egg Move | Dual Wingbeat |
Final Move | Endeavor |
Weaknesses | Water, Electric, Ice, Rock, Steel |
Despite Archeops not being significantly superior to Archen in flight abilities, it compensates by exhibiting extraordinary swiftness instead.
This gives them a chance to build up speed before jumping, which helps offset their bulky structure and provides extra hang time.
It’s quite advantageous for this Pokémon as its Attack and Special Attack statistics are relatively balanced, enabling you to train it in an array of different move sets.
Avoid overconfidence, as they may have multiple abilities, but they are vulnerable to five common types of attacks that could easily bring them down.
16. Aerodactyl
Prehistoric Pterror

First Appears In | Generation I |
---|---|
Type | Rock / Flying |
Cool Egg Move | Dragon Breath |
Final Move | Hyper Beam |
Weaknesses | Water, Electric, Ice, Rock, Steel |
On the surface, Aerodactyl may not appear superior to Archen or Archeops, but it holds several advantages that elevate its position in this ranking.
1. Firstly, his design is reminiscent of a dinosaur, featuring wings and sharp rows of teeth.
2. Secondly, Aerodactyl possesses powerful abilities such as Rock Head and Pressure.
But most importantly, Aerodactyl is just cool.
He’s among the original ancient Pokémon species. To make things even better, it can master some extremely beneficial moves such as Rock Slide, Iron Head, and Rock Polish.
As a gamer, I must admit that Aerodactyl would’ve soared even higher in my book if it followed the classic evolution path. However, since we’re focusing on non-Mega Evolutions here, poor old Aerodactyl didn’t get much of a flying start.
15. Chikorita
Slow To Sprout

First Appears In | Generation II |
---|---|
Type | Grass |
Cool Egg Move | Heal Pulse |
Final Move | Solar Beam |
Weaknesses | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
I can practically hear your confusion, so let me explain this entry.
I wasn’t planning on including any starters on this dinosaur list.
However, upon examining Chikorita’s evolutionary line, I noticed that if I was going to add Tropius, it necessitated their inclusion too.
Similar to many starting characters, Chikorita might not seem particularly remarkable, save for its cuteness. However, spend some time with it, and you’ll understand why this evolutionary line needed to exist.
14. Bayleef
Grow, Neck, Grow!

First Appears In | Generation II |
---|---|
Type | Grass |
Cool TM Move | Stomping Tantrum |
Final Move | Solar Beam |
Weaknesses | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
It’s likely that everyone has noticed the miniature Brontosaurus, Bayleef, by now. Its neck expands as it evolves, making this addition more understandable.
Despite having five unfavorable matchups, Bayleef can endure significant damage and retaliate effectively, whether through basic attacks or special attacks.
Similar to many Grass-type Pokémon, you possess the ability to choose between causing irritation or healing. Alternatively, you can opt for strategies involving moves such as Fake Tears, Stomp Angrily, and Knock Off.
13. Cranidos
Iron Skull

First Appears In | Generation IV |
---|---|
Type | Rock |
Cool Egg Move | Hammer Arm |
Final Move | Head Smash |
Weaknesses | Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Steel |
Contrary to previous records, Cranidos’ identity as a dinosaur is clearly evident from the get-go. His design closely resembles the tough-skulled Pachycephalosaurus, suggesting a habit of charging his robust head into anything in sight.
This fossil Pokémon is a pretty neat Rock type and features stellar Attack and pretty solid Speed.
Keep in mind that certain types of moves like Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel might pose challenges, but you’ll find yourself capable of handling many different Pokémon species.
You’ll learn to love moves like Rock Smash, Zen Headbutt, and even Fire Punch and Thunder Punch.
The only thing better than a versatile Pachycephalosaurus is its evolved form!
12. Rampardos
Keep On Bashing

First Appears In | Generation IV |
---|---|
Type | Rock |
Cool TM Move | Trailblaze |
Final Move | Head Smash |
Weaknesses | Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Steel |
As a devoted admirer, let me tell you, all the aspects you adored in Cranidos are intensified in Rampardos. He’s not just big; he’s colossal. Not just mean; he’s ferocious. And not just powerful; he’s punch-packing mighty!
As for Cranidos, it was quite impressive, but its evolved form boasts the ability to master an array of remarkable moves. Among those I particularly enjoy are Trailblaze, Outrage, Focus Punch, and Supercell Slam.
Unfortunately, despite focusing on EVs (Effort Values), this Pokémon isn’t exceptionally swift; its maximum speed reaches approximately 250 only.
So focus on your Attack stat and pray you’re able to withstand your opponent’s first attack!
11. Frigibax
Frosty The Dragon

First Appears In | Generation IX |
---|---|
Type | Dragon / Ice |
Cool Egg Move | Freeze Dry |
Final Move | Icicle Crash |
Weaknesses | Fighting, Rock, Dragon, Steel, Fairy |
As a devoted Pokémon enthusiast, I can’t help but feel that the Ice Dragon line could easily be a matter of personal preference. Yet, the cool, reptilian aura it exudes somehow stirs within me an undeniable sense of dinosaur-like essence.
After all, such a type of hybrid might have helped such a creature survive a potential Ice Age.
To put it simply, Frigibax begins quite modestly. Although it has a distinctive typing, it’s neither exceptionally powerful nor swift.
Like most Pokémon with multiple evolutions, it takes a little time to reach its full potential.
10. Arctibax
Fin Of Fury

First Appears In | Generation IX |
---|---|
Type | Dragon / Ice |
Cool Egg Move | Aqua Tail |
Final Move | Icicle Crash |
Weaknesses | Fighting, Rock, Dragon, Steel, Fairy |
Using Arctibax, you’ll begin to perceive the promise within this evolving species. It boasts robust Health Points (HP) and Attack, along with respectable defensive capabilities.
Instead, you could say that Arctibax has multiple attack options such as Bite, Frost Bite, Burrow, and Power Head.
As a gamer, I’d say, “When I snag an enemy with Thermal Exchange, it really tips the scales in my favor. Instead of taking fire damage, I boost my attack power instead!
Not a bad icy dragon, but we’ll save the final evolution for later on this list.
