As a long-time gaming enthusiast and follower of Hideki Kamiya’s illustrious career, I am thrilled to hear that one of the most influential game developers in history is expressing his continued interest in creating new sequels for two of my all-time favorite games: Viewtiful Joe and Okami. Having grown up playing these cult classics throughout the 2000s, their unique blend of action, adventure, and Japanese influences left a lasting impact on me.

Hideki Kamiya, a renowned game developer whom many adore, has expressed his continued passion for overseeing potential sequels to “Viewtiful Joe” and “Okami.” With three decades of experience in the gaming industry under his belt, Kamiya is known for his significant contributions to numerous beloved games. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he spent over a decade with Capcom. Later, he helped establish Platinum Games in 2006. Now, Kamiya yearns to revisit two of his cherished creations.

At Capcom and then Clover Studio, Hideki Kamiya played a significant role in producing two highly acclaimed series during the 2000s. The first was Viewtiful Joe, an addictive side-scrolling beat-em-up influenced by superheroes and Japanese “tokusatsu” programs. This franchise gained a devoted following with its initial release and sequel, Viewtiful Joe 2. The second was Okami, an action-adventure game rooted in Japanese folklore that received critical acclaim upon launch. Both titles later appeared on Wii and were remastered for contemporary consoles. Currently, Kamiya is focusing his energies on developing new projects directly at Capcom.

According to NintendoLife’s interview with Hideki Kamiya by “UNSEEN,” he expressed his enthusiasm for potential new installments of “Viewtiful Joe” and “Okami.” In a recent Capcom survey, Kamiya made it clear to the company that he wishes to direct a new “Viewtiful Joe” game. Regarding “Okami,” he shared his intention to complete its storyline. Kamiya believes that the relatively low popularity of “Viewtiful Joe” may have influenced Capcom’s decision against creating a third game.

Kamiya and artist Ikumi Nakamura’s interview isn’t their first discussion about creating new versions of “Viewtiful Joe” or “Okami.” This year, Kamiya expressed his interest in remaking the original “Viewtiful Joe” using Capcom’s RE engine through his YouTube channel. Previously, he had also mentioned his desire to create a fresh take on “Okami,” believing there was room for innovation with mechanisms like the Celestial Brush.

Kamiya, the creative force behind beloved games like “Viewtiful Joe” and “Okami,” revealed towards the end of last year that he was parting ways with Platinum Games after nearly 16 years. The reason for his departure, according to Kamiyas own words, stemmed from a disagreement over the direction the studio was taking. With an artist’s perspective, Kamiya sees games as masterpieces and is eager to continue crafting such works elsewhere, whether through new installments of his iconic franchises or by starting something entirely fresh.
