Shawn Layden, a former executive at PlayStation, recently shared his thoughts on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. Launched in 2017, Game Pass lets players access a large library of hundreds of games for a monthly fee. A key feature is the availability of new games on the very day they are released, especially those published by Microsoft and its owned studios like Bethesda and Activision.
Xbox Game Pass started strong, but recently people have begun to question how long it can last. Price hikes and reports of lost income from including games in the service have led to worries about whether it still offers good value, especially to attract new players and keep existing ones. Because of this, Xbox needs to demonstrate that Game Pass is a worthwhile investment, particularly with a new console, Project Helix, on the horizon.
Shawn Layden Offers Grim Thoughts on Xbox Game Pass Amid Price Concerns
Shawn Layden, in a comment on LinkedIn, shared his opinion on Xbox Game Pass. He suggested that Microsoft is working hard to make the service successful, even though current data suggests it’s struggling. Layden believes a thorough analysis of what’s working and what isn’t would be beneficial for the entire gaming industry.
Former PlayStation executive Jack Tretton recently commented on the challenges facing Xbox Game Pass, following an internal memo from new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Sharma admitted the subscription service has become too costly for many gamers, especially after several price hikes in recent years. The most expensive plan, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, is set to cost $29.99 per month by the end of 2025. Reports also suggest that including the popular Call of Duty franchise in the subscription service cost Xbox over $300 million in potential direct sales.
Shawn Layden, formerly the head of PlayStation, has spoken about Xbox Game Pass before, and last year he voiced his worries about how the service works. He’s concerned that the “Netflix for gaming” approach could leave developers underpaid, essentially turning them into “wage slaves.” This isn’t a unique viewpoint; even people who used to work at Xbox have questioned whether Game Pass fairly supports and pays the developers who create games for it.

Shawn Layden’s recent statements might point to bigger problems for Xbox. The company has faced a series of challenges, including price hikes for Game Pass and consoles, layoffs, and even releasing popular games on PlayStation 5. These difficulties have led to the departure of CEO Phil Spencer and president Sarah Bond, creating a period of uncertainty for Xbox as it prepares to launch Project Helix. Layden’s comments simply add to the questions surrounding the brand’s future.
