Fairshake Gains $25 Million from A16z Crypto as U.S. Elections Near

As a crypto investor with a few years of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the rapid growth and evolution of this industry firsthand. The recent news of Andreessen Horowitz’s cryptocurrency arm, a16z Crypto, donating $25 million to Fairshake Political Action Committee (PAC) comes as no surprise.

Ahead of the U.S. elections, Andreessen Horowitz’s cryptocurrency division, a16z Crypto, has given $25 million to the political action committee, Fairshake. This contribution signifies the ongoing significant financial backing of cryptocurrency industry leaders in political campaigns.

A16z Crypto Donates Millions to Political PACs

Chris Dixon, the head of a16z Crypto, announced on Thursday that their firm has contributed a total of $47 million to various political campaigns in 2023. Dixon emphasized the importance of these donations for the industry, stating, “It is crucial for our sector to maintain momentum and prove that the US can lead in creating the upcoming wave of blockchain innovation.” In 2023, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, a16z’s founders, donated $19 million personally to Fairshake and an additional $3 million to other related PACs.)

Fairshake, backed by a16z Crypto, is set to amplify its impact during the upcoming elections. With several endorsed candidates progressing through their primaries this spring, it’s clear that Fairshake’s influence is expanding. By April 2024, the PAC held over $52 million in cash, an impressive sum augmented by recent investments from Ripple and a16z.

Crypto Firms Fund Pro-Blockchain Election Campaigns

Ripple, the cryptocurrency exchange, announced a $25 million donation to Fairshake on Wednesday, adding to the $20 million they gave in late 2023. This puts Ripple among the top contributors to Fairshake, following Coinbase’s lead, who donated an impressive $46.5 million in 2023, making it Fairshake’s largest benefactor that year.

As a researcher studying the intersection of cryptocurrency and politics, I’ve observed significant investments made by prominent crypto firms in political lobbying efforts. These contributions primarily support politicians who advocate for favorable regulations related to blockchain technology and digital currencies. For instance, Fairshake has devoted over $11 million towards federal election campaigns from January 2023 to April 2024, with a primary focus on pivotal races that could shape the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies.

In significant elections, Fairshake has made a crucial difference, most notably in the U.S. Senate race opposing California Democrat Katie Porter. Despite her efforts, Porter was defeated by Rep. Adam Schiff in the March primary. Notably, Fairshake backs incumbent representatives such as Tom Emmer, Josh Gottheimer, and Dusty Johnson, all recognized for their favorable views on cryptocurrency.
