Former PlayStation Exec Reveals He Was Fired After Three Decades at the Company

Shuhei Yoshida, a long-time leader at PlayStation, recently shared that he was removed from his position as President because of differing opinions with Jim Ryan. After dedicating 31 years to the company, Yoshida is now discussing the challenges he faced during his time there.

Yoshida began his career at Sony in 1986, initially working on PCs, and later became a key member of the team that created the original PlayStation. He went on to produce several beloved PlayStation games, including Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ape Escape. He led Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios from 2008 to 2019, before transitioning to lead PlayStation Indies. He retired in 2025, but has stated that his departure from the Worldwide Studios role wasn’t his own decision.

Shuhei Yoshida Says Ex-CEO Jim Ryan Forced Him to Leave His Position as President

At the ALT: GAMES festival in Australia, Yoshida explained that his move from President to head of PlayStation Indies wasn’t voluntary. While he’s previously hinted at this, he recently shared that Jim Ryan essentially made the decision for him. Yoshida also stated that a key source of conflict with Ryan, who left Sony in 2024, was his own unwillingness to listen to Ryan’s direction.

Yoshida explained that Ryan offered him a choice: step down or lead the PlayStation Indies team. While it was reported he was pushed out of his position as President, Yoshida emphasized he genuinely enjoyed his work with the Indies division and seemed positive about the situation. He mentioned Ryan asked him to do some unusual things, though he didn’t specify exactly what they were, hinting it might involve how Sony is approaching certain new games.

Jim Ryan Was a Big Fan of the Live-Service Model

Sony has been actively exploring games that constantly update and offer ongoing content – often called “live-service” games – in recent years. While some, like Helldivers 2 and Marathon, have done well, others, such as Concord, haven’t been successful, showing a mixed track record. Despite this, Sony remains dedicated to its traditional story-driven, single-player games, but the former CEO Jim Ryan was a strong advocate for growing their presence in the live-service market.

Several online games PlayStation was developing under former CEO Jim Ryan have been canceled, including a multiplayer version of The Last of Us, a God of War spin-off, and a Twisted Metal project. Current CEO Hiroshi Yoshida may have been referencing these canceled projects when he criticized Ryan’s past demands, though that’s not confirmed. Yoshida has spoken positively about leading the development of successful PlayStation exclusives like God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima. Despite leaving the company, his leadership was key to the success of many of PlayStation’s biggest games.
