As a lifelong fanatic of both video games and Funko Pops, I can confidently say that 10:10 Games has struck gold with their creation, Funko Fusion. Having spent countless hours poring over my own collection of vinyl figurines, I can attest to the painstaking detail and dedication that went into recreating these beloved characters in a video game format.
Transforming beloved Funko Pop figures into video game characters, Funko Fusion is a thrilling third-person action-adventure game by developer 10:10 Games. This grand endeavor showcases a variety of well-known franchises like Jurassic World and Back to the Future, and the dedication put into each world is evident. The Funko Pops have been painstakingly recreated, and 10:10 Games has gone to great lengths to remain true to the original material, ensuring that Funko enthusiasts everywhere can fully immerse themselves in Funko Fusion.
10:10 Games co-founder Arthur Parsons and animation director Andy Dolan shared insights about Funko and fan culture during an interview with Game Rant, focusing on the creation of Funko Pops in a series called Funko Fusion. They delved into the challenges faced when animating facial expressions, the meticulous attention to detail aimed at making them as similar as possible to their vinyl versions, and various other aspects of the process.
Funko Fusion is a Love Letter To Funko Pops
Translating Funko Pops into video games might seem like a logical step, but due to the unique anatomy of these vinyl figurines, it was never going to be straightforward. The oversized heads and diminutive bodies pose challenges, yet the absence of mouths arguably presents the most significant obstacle. This lack of mouths makes it essential to master the humor and emotional expression of the characters more precisely than usual. Parsons detailed the process of ensuring that the Funkos were authentically brought to life from the very beginning.
We spent quite a while exploring the mechanics of a Funko Pop! figure: testing various movements like jumping, running, landing, dying, and so on. A large number of tests were conducted to ensure we accurately captured the initial animation for a Funko Pop!. Additionally, we experimented with different facial expressions and determining if they have mouths or not.
In the creation of Funko Fusion, the choice to omit mouths demonstrates the dedication of the development team to preserving the authenticity of these vinyl figures. Consequently, the team had to devise alternative ways to showcase the characters’ personalities, without compromising the narrative or humor due to this omission. Dolan elaborated on this strategy a bit further.
Expressing emotions on Funko figures without mouths can be challenging, but we manage to convey a lot through the use of eyebrows and eyelids. We emphasize the expressions by exaggerating emotions in these areas. The figure’s body posture often plays a significant role in expressing emotions as well; for instance, a slumped shape might suggest sadness, while a bouncy walk could symbolize joy.
As a diehard enthusiast, I can’t help but feel exhilarated about the Funko Fusion project. It’s like a dream come true, merging the iconic Funko Pops with an array of cherished intellectual properties to create something extraordinary and one-of-a-kind. This seems tailor-made for fans, offering an immersive experience where we can witness unthinkable crossovers, such as He-Man teaming up with characters from Hot Fuzz and Jaws in ways that make our imaginations run wild.
