Gears of War Collection: Remastered?

Since 2014, when 343 Industries and Xbox Game Studios launched Halo: The Master Chief Collection, fans of the second most beloved exclusive games franchise from Xbox, Gears of War, have been clamoring for a similar compilation for the third-person shooter series. Given that Halo: MCC initially included only games featuring Master Chief as the main character, Gears of War enthusiasts proposed their collection to be christened Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection. Though The Coalition revamped Gears of War 1 into 2015’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the upcoming Gears of War: Reloaded, there is still a strong possibility that a Marcus Fenix Collection could make its debut soon.

The History of Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

It’s been noticed that there hasn’t been any official confirmation or title given to the collection known as “Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection.” Despite enthusiasts discussing the possibility of a remastered anthology of the original Gears of War trilogy, particularly focusing on Gears of War 2 and 3 around their 10th anniversaries in 2018 and 2021, neither The Coalition nor Xbox have commented officially about this potential Gears of War compilation. Instead, The Coalition has been busy creating new installments and spin-offs of the Gears of War series, such as Gears of War 4 (2016), Gears Pop! (2019), and Gears 5, in addition to Gears Tactics (both released in 2020).

For five years after the launch of Gears Tactics, whispers about The Coalition working on a collection of the initial Gears of War trilogy have been persistent. In 2022, Nick Baker from Xbox Era podcast and Tom Warren from The Verge hinted at an upcoming Gears of War compilation. Later in 2023, Baker confirmed that more Gears remasters were on the horizon without disclosing his sources or additional information. In early 2025, Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft Gaming, was seen playing Gears of War 2 and 3, sparking speculation among fans that the games’ remasters might soon be announced. However, Spencer later clarified that he was merely demonstrating the games to a friend who had never played Gears before.

PlayStation 5 Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

Over the past few years, Microsoft has been gradually moving its top-tier video games to competing PlayStation systems. For instance, “Forza Horizon 5” was released on PlayStation 5 in late April 2025. It was thought that this trend would continue when sources like leakers and industry insiders hinted at a remastered collection of the original “Gears of War” trilogy being unveiled at the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. However, if these rumors are correct, this hypothetical collection wouldn’t contain any PVP multiplayer. Instead, it seems that the announcement made recently about “Gears of War: Reloaded” for PS5 might have been what extas1s and DetectiveSeeds were referring to, rather than “Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection,” which could still potentially be revealed at the upcoming showcase.

Approximately in 2015, The Coalition briefly undertook a remastering project for Gears of War 2. This is suggested by 3D models for the Riftworm’s interior crafted by environmental artist Ayi Sanchez. However, this project was eventually terminated to devote more attention to enhancing multiplayer gameplay aspects.

How a Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Could Work

Given the forthcoming launch of “Gears of War: Reloaded” in August, available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, there’s a possibility that the “Marcus Fenix Collection” might not see the light of day this year, if it’s even in development. With “Gears of War: E-Day” anticipated to be the next “Gears” game, slated for release possibly towards late 2025 or early 2026, there’s a chance that the “Marcus Fenix Collection” could follow “E-Day”. If both “Reloaded” and “E-Day” perform well on Xbox and PlayStation platforms, this could spur Microsoft to authorize The Coalition and potentially another developer to commence work on remastering “Gears of War 2” and “3” for a collection aimed at bringing PlayStation and PC players up-to-date with the series.

A hypothetical “Gears of War: Marcus Fenix Collection” might encompass remastered campaigns and multiplayer modes from Gears of War 1, 2, and 3, including all DLC and possible additional lore content similar to Halo’s terminals. The multiplayer advancement for each game could be modernized and harmonized to unlock cosmetic items across all three games, with The Coalition potentially creating new character and weapon skins for the multiplayer, much like Halo: MCC’s Fractures armor. If launched on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, it could support crossplay between platforms, enabling friends to play together effortlessly regardless of their chosen system.

The Potential for a Marcus Fenix Collection to Include Sequels and Spin-Offs

Instead of just featuring the original Gears of War trilogy, there’s a possibility that The Coalition could expand the Marcus Fenix Collection to include Gears of War: Judgment, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5 as well. Given that Marcus Fenix is present in these three games and they are all reaching a certain age where a slight remaster might be due – with Judgment being 12 years old, Gears of War 4 at nine years old, and Gears 5 at six years old – including Judgment and its sequels in the Marcus Fenix Collection would make it easier for all players and Gears fans to stay updated on the series’ major events. This compilation could serve as a convenient way for everyone to prepare for the anticipated launch of Gears of War 6.
