Summary
- Ghost of Yotei‘s map will be Sucker Punch’s biggest, allowing players to find villains at their own pace.
- Yotei introduces changes in weapons and combat, enabling players to use enemy weapons without samurai honor.
- The game promises a fresh story set 300 years from Tsushima, following a lone mercenary seeking vengeance.
If you enjoyed the expansive world of Ghost of Tsushima, brace yourself because its sequel, Ghost of Yotei, promises an even larger gameplay area. That’s quite a statement!
This information was recently validated during an interview conducted by the Japanese gaming site, Famitsu, with the Creative Director of Sucker Punch Productions, Nate Fox, and their Art Director, Jason Cornell.
Ghost of Yotei Designed For Players to Find Vilains On Their Own

In a conversation with Famitsu (translated), Cornell affirmed that the map for Ghost of Yotei will be the largest one crafted by the studio yet. Besides Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch has also created open-world games like inFamous and inFamous 2.
Cornell mentioned that for open-world experiences, we’ve created more freedom and extensive maps than ever before in an open-world title. Players are free to traverse the landscape and confront the Yotei Six. Instead of guiding this directly from the game’s perspective, the design allows players to discover the whereabouts of the Yotei Six on their own and choose to seek revenge for them.
If you’ve experienced Tsushima, you’d realize its game environment is vast and intricate enough to make one feel disoriented – more so when searching for the numerous hidden mysteries it contains.
Last month, I shared exciting news about the upcoming ability for players to dual-wield in Ghost of Yotei. However, it seems there’s even more to look forward to when it comes to weaponry and battles!
During the same interview, it was verified that in the game, players can seize weapons discarded by opponents and employ them against them. Unlike Atus, Jin does not share the same background as a samurai, hence Atus doesn’t have any kind of honor code to adhere to.
In this scenario, there’s not just hand-to-hand combat weapons, but also bows and projectile ones. Moreover, unlike traditional samurais, Atsushi does not prioritize the samurai code of honor. Instead, they will employ whatever immediate tools they find for fighting. For instance, Atsushi might seize an enemy’s dropped weapon to hurl at other adversaries after he defeats them, as Fox pointed out.
This is great to hear and hopefully, leads to more variety in terms of engagement.
Ghost of Yotei rides out on October 2 exclusively on the PS5.
