Summary
- DC Studios Elseworlds will now have their opening logo
- Gunn supports creative flexibility in Elseworld tales
- Uncertainty about logo choice for Elseworlds, likely Batman-focused
James Gunn’s DC Universe is already running at top speed. However, another realm within DC, known as “Elseworlds,” which he also oversees as co-CEO of DC Studios, will distinguish itself from the main DC Universe through its unique animated emblem or opening sequence.
For some time now, DC Comics has been producing stories that don’t align with the traditional continuity, such as “Kingdom Come” and “Superman: Red Son”. Recently, there have been several Elseworlds film projects like the mature animated TV show “Harley Quinn”, which just started its fifth season, “Joker”, “The Batman”, and “The Penguin”. While these projects are entertaining, they haven’t been officially categorized into a separate universe. The creation of a new DC Universe could potentially confuse fans about the chronology of both canonical and non-canonical DC events.
Future Elsewords Projects Will Have an Opening Logo
James Gunn explained on Twitter that while all DC films and TV shows are now under the DC Studios umbrella, the shift in executive leadership and other factors prevented them from adding the new DC Studios fanfare to older projects like Harley Quinn. He noted that for The Penguin, they’ve added a different DC Studios animation instead. Additionally, Gunn mentioned that they are currently creating the opening for the DC Studios Elseworlds.

Previously, Gunn had expressed his thoughts about the Elseworlds concept, criticizing inconsistencies with the previous DCEU. In late 2023, he emphasized the need for exceptional Elseworld tales within the DC Universe while allowing creative flexibility to explore alternate versions of DC characters. In a similar vein, Safran, in announcing the first chapter of the DC Universe, “Gods and Monsters,” clarified that the DCU exists within a multiverse, with a primary focus on one universe, and that anything not part of the DCU would be clearly distinguished.
Currently, it’s uncertain exactly how James Gunn plans to utilize the DC Elseworlds brand. However, his decision to adopt Joe Shuster’s Superman image, which depicts Superman breaking free from chains, as the new emblem for DC Studios, demonstrates his affection for classic themes once more. Given this and the fact that Batman kick-started the Elseworlds imprint with “Batman: Holy Terror” in 1991 and has been pivotal to its success through popular titles such as “Batman: Gotham by Gaslight” and “Batman: Red Rain”, it’s reasonable to speculate that Gunn might opt for a Batman-centric animated montage of heroes as an introduction to the Elseworlds sub-universe.
