Hands-On Preview: Yooka-Replaylee Could Be 2025’s 3D Platformer Gem

90s children are likely to recall how influential 3D mascot platformers were in shaping our early gaming experiences. Regrettably, as we matured, this genre seems to have receded from the contemporary gaming world, even though I am confident that I’m not the only one yearning for another endearing installment to captivate us.

Because of that, I clearly recall feeling enthusiastic about Yooka-Laylee when I first saw its Kickstarter page about ten years ago. With a fresh take on the Banjo-Kazooie formula developed by a team who actually split off from Rare themselves? Absolutely, sign me up.

Back in 2017, the game didn’t quite capture the hearts of many gamers as I had hoped it would upon its release. Regrettably, my own progress in the game was cut short, as a different title somehow managed to draw me completely into its world, leaving this one behind.

In the sequence of games, Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair (the two-dimensional addition) arrived towards the end of 2019 and significantly enhanced the general game quality, however, I couldn’t help but crave a similarly engaging 3D experience.

remarkably, the Yooka-Laylee team at Playtonic plans to please millions of gamers like myself by reviving the game in 2025 with the upcoming Yooka-Replaylee. This new version is a complete overhaul of the 2017 game, intended to rectify every issue, criticism, and suggestion the team received when they first released it. I must admit, this sounds like an enticing prospect.

Last month, I had a chance to try out Yooka-Replaylee at the LVL UP Expo in Las Vegas while visiting PM Studios’ booth. After interacting with the game for a while and chatting with the developers, I left feeling extremely enthusiastic and hopeful.

It appears that Yooka-Laylee is gearing up to deliver one of the top-notch 3D platformer experiences in recent times, and here’s why:

1. The game’s unique blend of humor, charm, and nostalgia harks back to the classic platformers we all grew up with.
2. The level design is both creative and challenging, providing a fresh take on the genre while still being accessible for players of all skill levels.
3. The collectibles and secrets hidden throughout the game encourage exploration and replayability, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
4. The co-op mode adds an extra layer of fun, allowing friends to team up and conquer challenges together.
5. The voice acting and character designs are top-notch, bringing each quirky character to life in a memorable way.
6. Lastly, the game’s development team has shown dedication to fixing bugs and improving the overall experience post-launch, ensuring that Yooka-Laylee remains a polished and enjoyable title for years to come.

Truly Gorgeous Presentation Modernization

Straightaway, it was apparent that a lot of effort had gone into polishing Yooka-Replaylee to make it one of the most stunning 3D platformers I’ve come across. In stark contrast to its 2017 counterpart, Yooka-Replaylee seems vibrant and full of life, boasting visual quality comparable to that of its peers in the genre.

Yooka and Laylee have a charming, almost movie-like appearance, suggesting they could be characters in a Pixar or Dreamworks animation. The environment is bursting with color and vitality, while the backdrops are stunningly beautiful and effectively emphasize the grandeur of the game as a whole.

This game seems to be the kind I might occasionally pause to admire rather than play extensively. While it’s not a highly realistic powerhouse, the aesthetics are simply charming, and the overall polish gives it an appealing sheen, undeniably so.

In the original version of the game, the soundtrack was widely appreciated as a standout feature, and it has been further enhanced in Replaylee. Now, it’s a complete orchestral piece that matches in grandeur, sweep, and fun whatever one might desire.

Without a doubt, the game has been refined to an exceptional level. While its core remains the same, the improvements are evident, making Replaylee appear noticeably enhanced. At the end of the day, it’s astonishing how much more polished it looks. Moreover, during my demonstration, it ran flawlessly with no hiccups.

Ground-Up Gameplay Additions and Refinements

One aspect that immediately stands out in the gameplay of Yooka-Replaylee is its significantly larger and open feel. The levels are extensive, overflowing with fresh collectibles, activities, pathways, platforms, and adversary interactions. If Yooka-Laylee seemed a bit simple and linear for the genre previously, Replaylee will undoubtedly rectify that perception for you.

…if Playtonic had the opportunity to add a little more (either a full mile or just an inch) to Replaylee’s development, it appears as though they took advantage of that chance.

Starting off with a broader array of skills and powers from the get-go, rather than receiving them piecemeal throughout your gameplay experience, significantly enhances the overall combat experience, making it more enjoyable and dynamic.

The game’s in-game challenges have undergone significant changes, improvements, or new additions. A useful in-game map has been implemented for easier navigation and tracking of collectibles. The camera controls have received a major upgrade. Additionally, tonics and cosmetics offer expanded customization options for the game.

It appears as though Playtonic has gone the extra mile (or even an extra inch) beyond what one might expect with Replaylee.

The game developers went a step further by incorporating mini-games within the main game. They were excited to reveal that arcade machines located globally were in fact hiding a classic-style puzzle-platformer game, available for players to explore at their leisure, purely for fun’s sake.

In the new arcade game, you control a dinosaur with an elongating neck as it navigates isometric mazes brimming with challenges such as barriers, adversaries, and levers or buttons to progress through levels, eventually reaching the exit of each stage.

Is this item necessary? Not at all, but oh my goodness, it was genuinely enjoyable and added an interesting touch to the game, significantly boosting the overall worth of the deal.

A Tale Of Developer Passion And Promise

Regardless of one’s opinions on the contemporary gaming world, there is one aspect I find particularly appealing: developers have the freedom to continually refine and enhance their games to meet the high standards desired by players. A clear illustration of this can be found in the evolving narrative of No Man’s Sky.

Playtonic’s development of Yooka-Laylee seems like it might have been influenced by an extended Early Access phase, ultimately resulting in a game tailored specifically for their fans. During my demonstration, the team shared that they considered and addressed every constructive piece of feedback and desire from players to the best of their ability. I admire their dedication to their fanbase greatly.

It appears this game was crafted with an abundance of affection, attention, and self-respect, aiming to captivate even those who found the 2017 version falling short of their desired or anticipated experience.

It’s possible that someone might argue that if the original Yooka-Laylee was indeed a consumer-focused project, all these enhancements could have been added to it. However, I would disagree in this specific instance. While Yooka-Replaylee is essentially an updated version of the 2017 title, I strongly feel that players will perceive it as a completely separate game altogether.

…a new 3D platformer that has the potential to be one of my favorites in recent memory.

To put it frankly, there might be individuals who count 2017’s release among their all-time favorite games. It seems unfair from a historical game preservation perspective to merely update Yooka-Laylee into Yooka-Replaylee given how strikingly distinct the two games actually are.

I am quite optimistic that Yooka-Replaylee will prove its worth and exceed expectations when it launches on both PC and console systems towards the end of 2025. Frankly, I’m eager to explore it as soon as it hits the shelves, and I can’t help but feel invigorated at the prospect of discovering a fresh, top-notch 3D platformer that could potentially join my list of all-time favorites in the near future.

For the game Yooka-Replayee, a specific launch date hasn’t been set yet, only that it’s expected in or after 2025. However, PC enthusiasts can add it to their wishlist on Steam at present. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more updates about it!
