The Harry Potter film series, known for its incredible success, has seen one of its actors reprise their character and share their motivations behind it.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the captivating characters that populate the Harry Potter movie series. Spanning eight films – from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011) – these movies are brimming with intriguing personalities, such as Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs), Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis), and Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) to mention but a few. One of these characters graciously shared their experience working on this iconic film series.

In a different context, we could say:

Isaacs portrayed the character of Lucius Malfoy, Draco’s father, who had an air of superiority as a pure-blood wizard. Known for his arrogance, wealth, and influence, Isaacs shared his insights about his role in the popular series. He admitted that his character was essentially there to shed light on why Draco was such a difficult student at Hogwarts. Isaacs didn’t take pride in his character, referring to him as “racist.” Yet, he clarified that Lucius’ strict upbringing of his son was a reflection of the way he himself had been raised, and his ambition was to elevate the prestige of the magical school for young wizards and witches. He elaborated:

“My role was essentially to show the audience why Draco was such a problematic student at Hogwarts.”

Isaacs wasn’t proud of his character, labeling him “racist.” However, he accepted that Lucius’ parenting style was influenced by how he himself had been brought up, and his objective was to enhance the reputation of the magical school. He clarified:

Originating from homes lacking love, my upbringing was a continuous sequence of loveless parenting similar to his. The resemblance in our roles might seem enchanting or amusing, but it’s quite clear: one who believes Muggles should not intermingle with wizards, and another attempting to restore Hogwarts to its former glory.

Despite the fictional relationship between actors Tom Felton (Draco) and Jason Isaacs (Lucius) in the Harry Potter series being strained, they share a strong friendship off-screen. They frequently communicate with each other, and the original Harry Potter cast members have a WhatsApp group. In a recent interview, it was shared that when Jason Isaacs first approached Chris Columbus to voice Lucius with his most annoying voice, he was initially turned down. However, Daniel Radcliffe, who was just a child at the time, supported him, stating that his voice as Lucius was “kind of cool,” and people in playgrounds would likely imitate it. This convinced Chris Columbus to agree. More recently, Jason Isaacs suggested Meryl Streep for the role of Lucius in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series because she is a versatile actress capable of anything, similar to her role in The Devil Wears Prada.

In essence, it’s justifiable for Isaac to label Lucius as racist, given his strong bias towards pure-blood wizards and witches. He holds a high regard for those with magical bloodlines like his, regarding Muggle-borns such as Hermione Granger as inferior. His contempt is also evident in his disdain for the Weasley family due to their connections with Muggles. In the book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” Lucius took his prejudice too far, secretly planting a malicious diary into Ginny Weasley’s cauldron books in an attempt to reopen the Chamber of Secrets, causing chaos, undermining Albus Dumbledore, and targeting Muggle-born students. This ultimately led to Ginny being possessed by the diary, a temporary removal of Dumbledore as Headmaster, and Lucius’s subsequent humiliation and loss of power and influence. Though not the most admirable character in the “Harry Potter” series, Lucius Malfoy certainly leaves an indelible mark.

HBO’s Harry Potter TV series is expected to premiere in 2026.
