Hasbro Spent 1 Billion on Games While Avoiding Live Service and Mobile Titles

Hasbro has invested almost $1 billion in developing new games since 2018, focusing primarily on traditional game formats rather than live-service or mobile gaming. They currently have several games in the works based on their most popular brands.

Hasbro is a massive entertainment company known for owning many popular brands. Based in Rhode Island, they’re the creators of classics like Transformers, G.I. Joe, Monopoly, and The Game of Life. They also own Wizards of the Coast, which includes popular game franchises like Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. A recent report shows how much Hasbro is investing in its games, and highlights how they’ve successfully avoided a common mistake many companies make today.

Hasbro Is Focusing on “Core” Games

In a recent interview with The Game Business, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks revealed the company has spent almost $1 billion on games based on its own brands since 2018. He explained that Hasbro is prioritizing what they call “core games” – well-made games with substantial content, around 40 to 50 hours of gameplay. Cocks believes this approach will be more successful than investing in mobile or constantly-updated live-service games. He also hinted that Hasbro is considering expanding its game development studios beyond North America, potentially looking at more affordable options in Eastern Europe.

Hasbro has primarily focused its game investments on traditional board games, but hasn’t ignored mobile gaming. They’ve partnered with leading mobile game developers to create digital versions of their popular brands. Scopely, for example, has developed mobile adaptations of classics like Monopoly, Yahtzee, and Scrabble. Notably, Monopoly Go, a collaboration between Scopely and Hasbro, has been incredibly successful, earning over $5 billion in revenue by April 2025.

While Hasbro is concentrating on its classic games, its divisions are developing some promising new titles. At the 2025 Game Awards, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro revealed Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock, an action-adventure game based on the popular tabletop RPG, planned for release in 2027. The creators of Dungeons & Dragons are also working on a completely new game called Exodus, a sci-fi RPG being developed by the team behind the Mass Effect series.
