Heart Eyes – The Breakout Slasher Hit Of 2025 Is Getting A Sequel

A sequel to the critically acclaimed 2025 horror film, Heart Eyes, is in the works! Paramount Pictures has scheduled a release date of February 11, 2028, for Heart Eyes 2. According to Variety, director Josh Ruben will return, and he’ll be co-writing the script with Darcy Fowler. Spyglass Media will help produce and fund the project.

Premiering just before Valentine’s Day in 2025, the movie Heart Eyes is a unique blend of romantic comedy and slasher horror. It centers around Ally McCabe, a jewelry marketer recovering from a bad breakup, and Jay Simmonds, a freelance advertiser she has to collaborate with. The two find themselves targeted by a masked killer who is hunting couples.

‘Heart Eyes’ Features A Cast That Sells Both Genres

Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding star in Heart Eyes as Ally and Jay, and their chemistry is central to the film. They carry the story through its shifts between lighthearted romantic comedy and scary slasher moments. The strong supporting cast, including Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster, keeps the movie grounded, preventing it from becoming either a silly spoof or a purely straightforward horror film.

Even though it was made with a relatively small budget of $18 million, the movie Heart Eyes earned $33 million worldwide. Critics generally liked it too, giving it a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They described it as a fun combination of horror and romance – a bloody but heartwarming Valentine’s Day treat.

Similar to many films, Heart Eyes gained even more popularity after leaving theaters. When it became available on Netflix in May 2025, it quickly rose to the top of the most-watched list in the U.S., proving it wasn’t just a one-time horror success. The film’s unique blend of different moods and styles is what made people want to watch it again and again, something you don’t often see with typical slasher movies.

A ‘Heart Eyes’ Sequel Was Always On The Cards

Before the sequel to Heart Eyes was even officially announced, director Ruben was already brainstorming ideas. In a 2025 interview with Variety, he explained that creating a follow-up wouldn’t be difficult. He suggested that the basic plot of many classic romantic comedies – from His Girl Friday to Defending Your Life – could be used, simply placing the character of Heart Eyes within that framework and letting his unique abilities drive the story.

Ruben explained what made this project appealing: the chance to recreate the charm of classic romantic comedies like Bridget Jones or Love Actually, but with a dark twist – having those familiar characters genuinely frightened by a dangerous killer.

Ruben said he’s very enthusiastic because the film has the potential to be successful for a long time. The challenge now is to blend the exciting action and visuals with a heartfelt story about a relationship – whether it’s a love story or a complicated one – that audiences will genuinely connect with. He believes that emotional connection is what will ultimately make the film a success.

According to Ruben, the show’s success will likely depend on the strong connection between the lead actors, and the entire cast working well together. Now that a release date is confirmed, the initial concepts are becoming reality. Heart Eyes 2 seems poised to expand on the strengths of the original while also introducing new ideas, rather than simply retreading old ground.

Heart Eyes 2 will hit theaters on Feb. 11, 2028. The first movie is currently available on Netflix.
