Heist of the Century: $33 Million Bitcoin Scam Rattles Coinbase

Well, if you ever thought the good folks at Coinbase were invincible, think again. Our old friend ZachXBT, the on-chain investigator with eyes like a hawk, has uncovered a mighty fine mess—over $33 million in Bitcoin has gone walkabout, and it wasn’t just a stroll in the park.

The mysterious method behind this grand larceny is still wrapped up tighter than a drum, but ZachXBT did identify the wallet “bc1qvl” as the sweet little spot where the stolen loot ended up. And it’s not just a one-time deal; several other thefts have been hopping about since March 16, including 20 BTC, 46 BTC, and 60 BTC. Why, it’s enough to make a mule kick and a cat holler!

But this ain’t the first time ZachXBT has raised the red flag. Last year, scammers, disguising themselves as Coinbase support staff (with more charm than a politician on election day), managed to swindle $234 million in bitcoin from a poor Gemini creditor. Three suspects were hauled off to the hoosegow, but it sure doesn’t feel like justice was served.

And just last month, ZachXBT was at it again, reporting that criminals had been feasting on Coinbase users to the tune of $65 million between December and January. It’s enough to make a man’s head spin and his pockets lighter.

Despite the growing heap of worry, Coinbase seems to be taking it as calmly as a cat in a coal mine. They haven’t updated their compliance tools to flag the theft addresses involved in these recent scams. I guess they figure if they ignore it long enough, it’ll just go away. 🙄szą
