Here’s Why Ethereum’s Buterin Is Getting ‘Canceled’

As a long-term crypto investor and follower of the industry, I find Vitalik Buterin’s recent concerns about indoor air quality to be both thought-provoking and somewhat disconcerting. While it’s not surprising that someone as intellectually curious and influential as Buterin would bring attention to this issue, I’m aware that his views might not align with everyone in the crypto community.

Vitalik Buteran, a co-founder of Ethereum, has playfully expressed concern over potential backlash on social media for advocating for better indoor air quality.

In the spring of 2024, I found myself pondering, it’s been a while since I last stirred up controversy. Perhaps it was time for another provocative statement…

Last Saturday, a Canadian programmer posted a picture on social media. In the image, he was seen donning a face mask while seated beside an air quality monitor on a plane, indicating higher than normal CO2 levels.

Modern aircraft are equipped with advanced ventilation and filtration systems that keep the cabin air clean during flight. However, these systems are usually deactivated while the plane is on the ground.

Buterin is concerned about a lot of various viruses that can potentially contaminate the air.

As a crypto investor, I’d rephrase Buterin’s statement as follows: “The primary issue isn’t the CO2 itself, but the fact that it signifies approximately 7% of the air I breathe has previously been exhaled by others. A reading of over 3000 ppm equates to an abundant concentration of numerous viruses.”

Vitalik Buterin has consistently prioritized enhancing indoor air quality and hygiene. Unsurprisingly, the cryptocurrency community, known for its share of skeptics and conspiracy theorists, responded with predictable fervor. Some jokingly considered offloading their Ether investments in response to Buterin’s announcement. Others opted for personal attacks instead.

As a researcher studying the intersection of cryptocurrency and consumer behavior, I find it fascinating to observe the significant disparity in perspectives and understanding between those involved in the creation and development of crypto technologies, and those who use these technologies as consumers.

As a crypto investor and follower of the industry, I’m well aware of the often-controversial views expressed by Vitalik Buterin. In 2022, he caused quite a stir when he proposed the idea that synthetic wombs could potentially help reduce gender inequality in the future. While some found this concept intriguing and forward-thinking, others were skeptical or even critical of his proposition.
