In a recent social media update, Hideki Kamiya, founder of CLOVERS Inc., shared his lingering desire to develop Scalebound. This much-talked-about role-playing game was unfortunately scrapped in 2017, but Kamiya’s passion for the project remains unwavering, hinting at a potential revival.
For approximately four years, Scalebound was being developed by PlatinumGames, with Kamiya serving as the game’s director. However, the project was eventually cancelled. On more than one occasion, industry legend Kamiya has expressed a desire for Xbox to reconsider and take up the project once more.

PlatinumGames is well-known for producing games such as NieR and Bayonetta, but Scalebound would have been a far more expansive project compared to their previous works. In this game, players would delve into a universe teeming with dragons and dragonriders. Announced in 2014, the game’s trailer premiered at E3, sparking great enthusiasm among potential fans. Regrettably, interest in Scalebound has since waned.
A year prior to Scalebound’s unveiling, Microsoft entered into an agreement with Platinum Games, taking over the project and providing funds for its development. The game followed a third-person action-RPG structure and initially appeared promising, but unfortunately, Microsoft decided to cancel it in 2017.
The game’s pause was attributed to problems with the Unreal Engine, its failure to meet players’ expectations, and insufficient expertise at the studio when it came to developing some key game components.
However, approximately a decade following its cancellation, Hideki Kamiya emerged expressing his continued desire to develop Scalebound.

After a tweet from CLOVERS Inc., Phil exclaimed “Let’s do it!” Later on, it was discovered that employees at CLOVERS were gathered around Kamiya’s desk, sharing memories of Scalebound and watching game videos on YouTube. In the post, Kamiya mentioned his desire to work on the project again in the future.
2023 saw speculation during a podcast conversation about a possible resurgence of the game Scalebound. However, there has been no update since then.
