Hong Kong Adults and Crypto: A Quarter Admit They’re Crypto Curious

Apparently, Hong Kong is getting ready for its love affair with cryptocurrencies. ❤️ Well, at least 25% of adults are, according to a new survey. That’s right, one in four are planning to dive into the deep, murky waters of crypto investment. Don’t forget your floaties!

The survey, conducted in November 2024 by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, found this to be a juicy 6% increase from September 2023. Who knew? Maybe people got bored of NFTs and wanted something even harder to explain at family dinners. 🤷

Now, before you think everyone’s sipping the crypto Kool-Aid, there’s still a hefty dose of skepticism in the air. Picture this: you’ve got 40% of people clutching their pearls and muttering, “What even is a tokenized deposit?” over all three surveys. Relatable, right?

Oh, and despite the whole FTX implosion in November 2022—the financial scandal heard ‘round the crypto Twitterverse—Hongkongers seem to think regulated exchanges are the Beyoncé of crypto platforms. Surprisingly, 20% more people are like, “Yeah, I’d park my hard-earned cash here, as long as there are rules.” Regulation = trust? Who knew government bureaucracy could bring the warm fuzzies? 😂

Bitcoin (BTC) is the prom queen of cryptocurrencies, with over 80% of respondents declaring they’re into it. That’s a 7% popularity bump since the first survey. NFTs, though? They’ve gone from a trendy TikTok star to yesterday’s meme, with interest dropping 11%. RIP coolness. 🪦

But wait for the plot twist: 72% of respondents are like, “What’s a central bank digital currency?” E-HKD didn’t fair much better, earning confused shrugs from 65%. Stablecoins? 61% don’t get it. Tokenized deposits? A whopping 81% unfamiliar. Sounds like Hong Kong has some serious explaining to do before hitting crypto hub status. 📉

To its credit, Hong Kong is trying to play the part of the crypto nerd who finally got invited to the cool table. They’ve handed out licenses for exchanges and made flirtatious moves with tokenized investment products. Oh, and don’t forget the flashy sandbox initiative created by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in August 2024. “Project Ensemble Sandbox” isn’t exactly a Marvel movie title, but it’s got potential—testing tokenized money for bank settlements and other potential use cases. 🏗️
