Spoilers for Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 and speculation for Evercold follow.
At the 2026 Fan Festival, Final Fantasy 14 announced Evercold, the next expansion planned for release in January 2027. This expansion, which begins a new story arc called the Godless Realms Saga, will take players to the previously unexplored Fourth Reflection. Featuring unique environments like floating islands and crystal structures, Evercold challenges the Warrior of Light to stop the Winterers from forcing a dangerous event called the Rejoining, while also safeguarding the Fourth Reflection from an impending disaster known as the Solstice. The story for this new Final Fantasy 14 expansion looks very exciting.
In Final Fantasy 14, the world of Etheirys was broken into fourteen separate pieces, called shards, during a war against the dark god Zodiark. The main story unfolds on the Source, which is considered the heart of Etheirys. However, with the upcoming Dawntrail expansion, players will have explored many of the other thirteen shards. The Fourth shard, previously unmentioned, appears to be particularly special and significant based on what we’ve seen so far.
Reflections, Calamities, and Rejoinings in Final Fantasy 14
The History and Fate of the 14 Shards of Etheirys
In Final Fantasy 14, the Ascians aimed to reconstruct Zodiark by merging reflections with the Source. To do this, they needed to cause equivalent disasters – called Calamities – on both the Source and a reflected world, ultimately destroying the reflection. By the time of A Realm Reborn, they had successfully done this to seven different worlds, each event resulting in one of the devastating Umbral Calamities that struck the Source in FF14.
| Umbral Calamity | Calamity Element | Source Event | Reflection Rejoined |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Wind | Windstorms supposedly caused by the departure of the Twelve | Fifth |
| Second | Lightning | Storms caused by abuse of the land forced civilization underground | Twelfth |
| Third | Fire | Holy wars, slavery, and famine ravaged civilization | Second |
| Fourth | Earth | The Allagan Empire triggered earthquakes that buried the empire | Third |
| Fifth | Ice | A brutal winter ushered in an ice age, freezing the world | Sixth |
| Sixth | Water | The Mhachi and Amdapori War of the Magi drained the land of aether and caused a worldwide flood | Tenth |
| Seventh | Darkness | The primal Bahamut escaped from his Allagan prison in the lesser moon Dalamud, leading to A Realm Reborn | Seventh |
If another Rejoining had happened before the Ascians were defeated in Final Fantasy XIV, Zodiark likely would have regained enough power to overcome Hydaelyn and break free, as he would have recovered more than half of the essential components he was missing.
Out of the original fourteen worlds, only the Source world and six of its reflections remain, and many of these have already been featured in the popular online game.

The Fourth Reflection Faces a New Type of Calamity
Most of the shattered worlds of Etheirys were either destroyed by the Ascians or damaged by failed attempts to piece them back together. However, the Fourth Shard stands out – it appears to have avoided much direct interference from the Ascians. Although Halmarut and her Winterers are now planning to act upon it, as shown in Final Fantasy XIV Patch 7.5, it’s unknown how much the Ascians affected it previously. Players will need to be vigilant and watch for signs of Ascian influence as they investigate this enigmatic world.
The Fourth shares a history with the First, also known as Norvrandt. Norvrandt was almost destroyed when the Ascians tried to rejoin it with another world, an attempt called the Flood of Light. Though the attempt failed, it nearly wiped out all life there. The people of Norvrandt survived by creating settlements like the Crystarium, much like how those on the Fourth built kingdoms in the sky to escape a spreading, deadly frost.
Meanwhile, the world of Final Fantasy 14 experienced a devastating event called the Storm Surge, a massive lightning storm that destroyed much of the world but left some cities like Alexandria and Treno intact. Now, the Fourth is facing a similar disaster – a harsh winter. It’s unknown whether this winter is caused by the machinations of the Winterer, or simply by the natural process of the shards coming back together without Hydaelyn’s influence. Regardless of the cause, the Fourth is struggling with a powerful elemental catastrophe.
The unusual Storm Surge on the Ninth might also be related to the Solstice. While the timing doesn’t quite fit – the goddess Hydaelyn in Final Fantasy XIV only recently weakened – differences in how time flows between different worlds could explain the connection.
Before the Endwalker expansion, very little was known about the worlds represented by the Fourth, Eighth, Ninth, and Eleventh shards. Now that the Ninth shard is being explored in Dawntrail, and the Fourth will be featured in FF14: Evercold, players can anticipate that the Eighth and Eleventh shards may appear in future updates, potentially bringing with them new disasters themed around the elements – fire, water, earth, or wind.
References to Norse Mythology on the Fourth in FF14: Evercold
And How They Might Tie Into the Godless Realms Saga
The teaser trailer, screenshots, and concept art for Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold include several references to Norse mythology, potentially giving us clues about the expansion’s story. Here’s a look at some of the most noticeable connections so far:
- The great tree seen in the mural, and later frozen before the praying Auri girl, could be an homage to Yggdrasil, the sacred tree that connects the realms of Norse myth.
- The creeping frost that threatens the Fourth is reminiscent of Fimbulvetr, the awful winter precursor to Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse.
- The elderly, one-eyed male Au Ra could be a reference to Odin, the leader of the Norse pantheon.
- The bridge and portal conjured by Ethos and Azem’s crystal to traverse worlds are similar to Bifrost, the rainbow bridge of Asgard in Norse myth.
- Calyx, the Winterer from the Ninth, takes the form of a squirrel plush, which might be a reference to Ratatoskr, a messenger who travels across Yggdrasil.
- Some of the architecture seen in Evercold’s concept art bears Norse inspiration, including the ships and serpentine structures evocative of Jormungandr, the World Serpent.
The upcoming ice age in Evercold feels like a sign of the end times, similar to the Norse apocalypse, Ragnarok. The powerful Au Ra character, reminiscent of Odin, probably wants to prevent this destruction and might even be the mysterious Winterer. The large tree shown in the trailer could be the key to saving everything. Just as Yggdrasil connects the different worlds in Norse mythology, this tree might have a similar ability, potentially stopping the coming disaster.
Sephirot is an ancient being originally summoned by plant-like creatures who revered a sacred tree on the continent of Meracydia. Fans have been eager to explore Meracydia for a long time, and if its tree is linked to the one from the Fourth Ancestor’s story, we might finally see it appear in the Godless Realms Saga.
The world of Final Fantasy 7 includes many nods to Norse mythology, most obviously in the name of the city Midgar, which comes from the Norse word for ‘earthly realm.’ Considering the connections between FF7 and items featured in Final Fantasy 14‘s recent Fan Fest, along with architectural designs resembling those of the Cetra, the upcoming Evercold expansion might include its own version of Midgar.

It’s possible all of this is just a coincidence. Final Fantasy 14 already includes many references to Norse mythology, like Midgardsormr, Nidhogg, and Odin, that aren’t related to this idea. However, the Evercold storyline is definitely leading to some major reveals, and the true nature of the Fourth could be central to Final Fantasy 14‘s Godless Realms Saga.
