I just saw this article got updated on May 2nd, 2026 – they added even more details about the game, which is awesome! It was originally published back on April 22nd, so it’s been getting a lot of attention.
A new dark fantasy game called Fear Tall Grass, where you battle creatures, is coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC (through Steam).
Forgotten Bastions is creating Fear Tall Grass, and Entalto Publishing will release the game. This is Forgotten Bastions’ first big game project, but Entalto has published several games since 2022, including the free-to-play RPG Vampire: The Masquerade – Heartless Lullaby, which is set in the World of Darkness. Most recently, Entalto’s studio released SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off in August 2025 – a very different kind of game!
Fear Tall Grass is a New Creature-Battler Heading to Nintendo Switch
The new game, Fear Tall Grass, introduces players to Gray, a child caught in the middle of a massive war. Players will explore a world overgrown with tall grass, battling dangerous creatures that hide within. To survive, you’ll need to capture and train these beasts, turning them into allies to fight alongside you in the war.
In Fear Tall Grass, careful planning is key. The game centers around a unique system where players navigate a board-like map by rolling dice to move their character along the edges. Each space they land on can either provide helpful supplies or trigger a battle.
When you start a battle in the game, you’ll face enemies in a 2D arena. Like in Pokemon, you’ll take turns commanding your creature – called a Vilekin – to attack. If you can weaken an enemy enough, you can try to capture it and add it to your team. The game will launch with 90 different Vilekin, categorized into 15 types within six elements. These elements interact with each other, meaning some are strong against others and vice versa. In addition to the Vilekin themselves, you’ll also have access to special Command abilities to help your creatures win battles.
The game includes six different elemental types: Water, Fire, Nature, Physical, Electric, and Rock. Players who have enjoyed games like Pokemon Legends: Arceus will find a similar system for mastering each creature, called Vilkin, and their types. By catching more Vilkin of each type, players can improve their abilities and unlock new evolution paths.

When you’re between adventures in the game, you’ll return to The Sanctuary of Light. This acts as a central base where you can build things, learn new abilities, and make lasting improvements to help you on future playthroughs. While we don’t have a specific release date for Fear Tall Grass yet, it’s currently planned to launch between October and December of this year. It’s also unknown whether the game will be available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch all at the same time, or if it will come to PC first before being released on consoles.
