How Get to the Star of Shamash in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss

As you progress deeper into Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, it becomes clear that the developers, known as Big Bad Wolf, are skilled at creating a disturbing and unsettling experience with their Lovecraftian-inspired horror.

The first few chapters challenged your mind, but Chapter 5: The Citadel will test your ability to survive. You’ll find yourself in a dangerous place that feels more like a living thing than just old ruins.

The game now throws its most unsettling challenge at you: a huge, living slime that has taken over the Citadel’s corridors. It responds to every move you make! Linger on it too long, and the main character, Noah, will become its next meal.

Okay, so this thing is directly in my way of getting the Star of Shamash – it’s seriously the next thing I need! The Star is way up at the top of its lair, so I’m gonna have to check everywhere in this gross place to figure out how to reach it. Gotta be careful, though!

Feeling overwhelmed by the Citadel’s dangerous levels? This guide will show you the safest path to the Star, helping you avoid becoming prey to the monstrous creature that lurks within.

How to Avoid the Guardian & Learn the Gold Symbols

When you begin the chapter, you’ll find several slimes around. If you approach and examine one, you’ll discover it’s a Milky Matter made of Organic Secretion. This will automatically be added to your Sonar.

Okay, so these little slime guys? They’re actually part of this huge, many-eyed boss called The Guardian that’s hanging out in the middle of this area. If you step on one, it instantly lets The Guardian know where you are, and trust me, you do not want that – it’s an instant Game Over if you stick around. Luckily, I figured out that if I turn on the Organic Secretion setting on my Sonar, it highlights all these slimes so I can avoid them! Seriously, go activate that now, it’ll save your life.

Okay, before I go any further, I just turned around and found something hidden behind a few things I couldn’t interact with – it’s called a Metal Quoit! I picked it up and stuck it in my bag, just in case. Now I’m carefully making my way through the only path, trying not to run into any of those slimes. Had to jump over the first one, by the way! I’m getting to a pretty big gap now, way too wide to jump across, so I guess I need to figure something else out.

Before you attempt to cross the gap, look around for an audio log and an Incomplete Prayer Stele. Investigating both will unlock a message written in Gold Symbols, adding a new clue to your deductions and registering those symbols on your Sonar. You’ll also discover the slime isn’t just an obstacle – it’s actually an invisible platform you can use to get across! Use your Sonar to highlight the milky slime above the chasm, then jump onto it to reach the other side.

Venture inside the laboratory to uncover the shocking truth: the Deep Ones and other strange beings weren’t natural – they were created artificially. The lab spans two floors, and here are the key things you’ll want to investigate:

  • Macroplankton: Located in a broken tank on the floor near the right side of the entrance, surrounded by dead larvae.
  • Human Blood: Follow the trail of blood to the left of one of the biggest tanks in the room (the one that contains a dead Deep One) to find a blood stain on the floor.
  • Shoggoth Heart: Found in the very last broken tank on the right-hand wall.

Before you go upstairs, check out the broken stone slab behind the three large tanks. Walk around them on the right, then duck under the cable to reach another slab, the Incomplete Prayer Stele. Using this stele will solve a puzzle you started earlier. This reveals that the solution to the gold symbols is located across the gap on the second floor, but it’s currently blocked by an invisible barrier.

Now, head to the second floor to understand everything that’s happening. To move forward, you need to combine the three parts of the Guardian within your Sonar.

Good news – you’ve already gathered the necessary ingredients! Just combine Human Blood, a Shoggoth Heart, and Macroplankton. Then, use the Sonar with this mixture to make the Guardian’s hidden tentacles visible on the second floor. You can then use these tentacles to cross over.

Next, examine the entire stone slab to decipher the Gold Symbols. Then, use the Metal Ring on the small box close by – it contains a tablet explaining how to create a Mysterious Orb to distract the Guardian. This will be important later! Remember to pick up the Metal Ring and add it back to your inventory.

How to Forge the Orb

Now that you can understand the gold symbols, find a way outside and use the Guardian’s tentacles to cross over. This will take you to the central structure of this area – the lair of a giant creature – where you’ll find the Star of Shamash, which is what we’re looking for.

To get to the glowing object, you need to disable the Guardian first. Start by going back to where the chapter began, near the large eye. This time, you can go through the rubble on the right side. After you get past the first tentacle, look for a narrow passage on your right that you’ll need to crouch to enter. Follow this passage to the end, then use a Metal Quoit to unlock the door.

First, search the ground floor, then go upstairs. You’ll see two doors—one you can open with the Metal Quoit, and another that’s locked. Go into the room you can access and examine everything carefully, paying special attention to the stele, which will give you a clue—the “Tablet: Register of Matter”—needed for the Vault.

In the forge, open the chest furthest to the right using a Quoit, then examine the tablet. This will give you a new clue. The solution to the puzzle is the “Tablet: Register of Matter” you discovered earlier. Figuring it out tells you the distraction orb needs to be made from Zirconium!

Okay, so I needed to find some Zirconium hidden on those metal shelves – thankfully, I didn’t have to scan everything, just the Zirconium itself. Once I grabbed it, I headed over to that wall forge thing and swapped out the wrong metal piece with my Zirconium. Finally, I used a Metal Quoit on the side of the forge to actually craft the Zirconium Yith Orb. That orb is apparently what I need to take down the Guardian!

How to Neutralize the Guardian

Now that you have the Yith Orb, go back through the doorway you came from. You’ll enter a slimy area. Use your Sonar – made by combining Human Blood, a Shoggoth Heart, and Macroplankton – to make a path of tentacles appear. This path will lead you back to the main building and to the Guardian.

Go up the stairs until you see a circular metal plate in the floor – it’s where a sphere is meant to go. You’ll need to drop something onto it to activate it. Once you do, place the Zirconium Yith Orb on the plate. This will start a cutscene and successfully distract the Guardian!

Now that the creature is distracted, you can climb its huge tentacles to get to the Star of Shamash and finish chapter five of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. Reaching the top will also reveal what happened to the scientist Marsh, which is a key part of the story.
