How Pokemon Shows Us That “Weak” Pokemon Are Actually Great Teachers

Pokémon Trainers always strive to build a strong team capable of defeating any challenge, from battling evil organizations to taking on the Pokémon Champion. Because the Pokémon world is full of obstacles, many Trainers focus on training only the most powerful Pokémon. This often means overlooking or abandoning Pokémon they don’t consider strong enough. Throughout the games, some Pokémon are even considered weak, even by experts like Pokémon Professors.

I’ve noticed some Pokémon really lean into the ‘underdog’ role. Take Wimipod, for example – it practically runs away at the sight of anyone! Then there’s Feebas, often teased for its appearance, but it’s surprisingly tough and can live in really dirty water. But the most famous one has to be Magikarp. Everyone knows it for its completely useless move, Splash! Yet, Magikarp’s story is inspiring, because like many Pokémon, it shows that even the weakest creatures can become incredibly powerful. It’s a testament to how much potential lies within even the most unassuming Pokémon.

Magikarp Is the Original “Weak” Pokémon

The Fish Pokémon Later Evolves Into the Fearsome Gyarados

Magikarp has been around since the very beginning of the Pokémon world, appearing in almost any body of water. It’s usually the first Pokémon new players catch! Despite being so common, Magikarp is often overlooked because it’s weak in battle, mostly knows the ineffective move Splash, and isn’t very good to eat. However, Magikarp are surprisingly tough and can even live in dirty water. In places like Hoppy Town, people actually love Magikarp and are even upset when it evolves into the powerful Gyarados.

Magikarp might seem weak, but it surprisingly evolves at level 20 into Gyarados, a tremendously powerful and destructive Pokémon. Gyarados, a Water/Flying-type, is known for appearing during times of trouble and won’t stop rampaging until everything around it is ruined. Mega Gyarados is even more formidable, but the process of Mega Evolution can cause it additional stress and anger. Because of this, a Gyarados – especially in its Mega form – will only obey a Trainer it deeply trusts. Notable examples of Trainers who have earned this trust include Lance, one of the Elite Four in Kanto, and Lysandre, the former leader of Team Flare.

Feebas Has a Drab Appearance but Is Surprisingly Hardy

Feebas Can Evolve Into Milotic, One of the Most Gorgeous Pokémon

Feebas is a rare Pokémon found only in six locations along Route 119 in the Hoenn region. While its rarity attracts some Trainers, many are put off by its unappealing looks. Though not known for its strength or intelligence, Feebas is remarkably resilient, similar to Magikarp. Its ability to thrive in any water condition – even shallow or polluted areas – has piqued the interest of Pokémon researchers.

Many people are surprised to learn that Feebas can evolve into Milotic, known as the Tender Pokémon, if its Beauty stat is raised significantly, or if you trade it while it’s holding a Prism Scale. This Water-type Pokémon is famous for being incredibly beautiful, and it’s also a strong competitor – even Pokémon Champions like Wallace and Cynthia have used it in battle.

In the manga, Ruby, a Pokémon Coordinator, trains a Feebas named Feefee for contests but doesn’t appreciate her true worth. He only realizes how beautiful Feefee is when she tries to help him, and is amazed when she evolves into the stunning Milotic right before his eyes. This experience teaches Ruby that true beauty comes from within, and Feebas perfectly embodies that lesson, finally displaying its inner grace through its evolved form.

Wimipod Is Skittish but Aids in Cleaning the Environment

Guzma’s Ace Is Golisopod, Wimipod’s Evolved Form

Wimipod, a Bug and Water-type Pokémon, lives near specific bodies of water and is known for being an opportunistic eater – it’ll eat just about anything! This Pokémon is also surprisingly neat, leaving its surroundings sparkling clean. However, Wimipod is quite timid and will quickly run away at the sight of other Pokémon or people. This fearfulness is reflected in its Ability, Wimp Out, which causes it to automatically switch out of battle to another Pokémon in your party when its health gets low, even before you can react.

Wimipod isn’t very strong on its own, but when it evolves into Golisopod, it becomes a powerful Pokémon. Golisopod spends much of its time meditating on the seafloor, but it’s a fierce competitor in battle, using its six arms to attack. In the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimensions DLC, Golisopod gains a Mega Evolution, Mega Golisopod, with an incredibly durable shell, changing its type to Bug/Steel. The most well-known Golisopod belongs to Guzma, the leader of Team Skull, who is a huge fan of Bug-type Pokémon. Guzma’s Golisopod, as seen in the anime, has the ability Emergency Exit, which lets it switch out of battle when it senses danger—a trait it inherited from its pre-evolution. However, Golisopod has overcome its earlier fearfulness and will now fight whenever it can, unless it’s facing a clearly overwhelming attack.
