An overview of strategies for warding off monster assaults in Monster Hunter Wilds, including optimal applications of Power Clashes and additional insights.
This version maintains the same meaning as the original, but is rephrased to be more natural and easy to read.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, blocking has undergone significant changes compared to previous games in the series. For weapon categories such as the Lance, Gunlance, Charge Blade, Sword and Shield, blocking becomes an integral part of initiating combos. Interestingly, for the Lance, blocking plays a vital role in its fundamental move set.
In most Monster Hunter games, combat has primarily focused on counterattacks and dodging, rather than blocking. That’s been the case, with exceptions for Lance and Charge Blade. However, in Monster Hunter World, blocking plays a significant role, not just for defense but also for immediate retaliation after blocking an attack.
Here’s everything you need to know about blocking in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Which Weapons Can Block in Monster Hunter Wilds?
In Monster Hunter Wilds, while the Power Clash mechanic has made blocking crucial in combat, not every weapon type possesses this capability. Out of the 14 available weapons, only a few can actively deflect attacks. Here’s a rundown of all the weapon types that can block:
1. Great Sword
2. Long Sword
3. Dual Swords
4. Hammer
5. Hunting Horn
6. Lance
7. Gunlance
8. Switch Axe
9. Charge Blade
10. Insect Glaive
11. Light Bowgun
12. Heavy Bowgun
Note that Shields, which are not considered weapons in this context, can also be used to block attacks separately from the weapon they’re equipped with.
- Great Sword
- Lance
- Gunlance
- Sword and Shield
- Charge Blade
- Heavy Bowgun
In the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, only six weapon categories have the ability to deflect attacks. Consequently, abilities like Guard and Guard Up are limited to these six specific weapon types. Fortunately, weapon skills no longer depend on armor skills in this version of the game.

How To Perform Power Clash?
Essentially, a Power Clash is just another way of saying Perfect Guard. To grasp its workings, check out our specific guide on this mechanic. In essence, a Power Clash is initiated when you consecutively execute two Perfect Guards. This feature not only blocks incoming damage but also empowers you to launch an immediate counterattack with a charged strike. What’s more, performing a Power Clash doesn’t deplete Sharpness, making it a highly beneficial skill for weapons such as the Great Sword. Additionally, a Power Clash frequently allows you to stumble (knock down) a monster, providing a chance to inflict extra damage without any additional effort.
