Engaging Jinotarus (Jin Dahaad) in Monster Hunter Wilds offers one of the game’s most thrilling showdowns, with the ice leviathan pursuing you through the remnants of the Iceshard Peaks. This battle serves as a memorable spectacle, pitting you against a colossal metallic beast across various arenas, where your goal is to deal it a decisive defeat. Battling Dahaad can be quite challenging, indeed.
This colossal beast possesses a few formidable tactics hidden within, capable of instantly defeating you if you’re not vigilant. When you advance to High Rank and encounter tempered creatures, you’ll once more cross paths with Jin Dahaad. To help you in your battle, I’ve outlined its vulnerabilities, suggestions for combat, and strategies to dodge the one-hit attack.
What type of monster is Jin Dahaad?
In Monster Hunter Wilds, Jin Dahaad is one of the largest monsters, if not the largest, often referred to as a colossal leviathan. It’s a four-legged ice-breathing beast with a repertoire of area-of-effect (AoE) attacks, and it can deliver a devastating one-shot attack in the second or third arena during combat. Given its status, Jin Dahaad serves as a notable monster encounter, and you’ll consistently face it in a limited number of arenas, allowing you to strategize by utilizing specific aspects of the environment for your advantage.
How to fight Jin Dahaad
When engaging Jin Dahaad, it’s typically best to maintain distance from its head due to the numerous AoE breath attacks and belly flops that pose significant danger. Although its head is a weak spot, the risk often outweighs the reward, particularly when there’s another vulnerable area on its hind legs—a wiser position to be in.
Jin Dahaad can inflict the iceblight status with its breath attacks, causing faster stamina consumption. Carry some Nulberries for such situations. Moreover, given the cold environment, ensure you drink something hot to stay warm.
How to avoid Jin Dahaad’s one-shot attack
In the battle against Jin Dahaad, the most challenging aspect occurs when he coils into a spiral and prepares to unleash a massive area-of-effect explosion. This attack usually results in an instant defeat if you’re hit by it. To evade this attack within the arena, as demonstrated in the video provided, you must use your Hook Slinger to pull down a floating ice block and take cover behind it. There are typically several of these blocks in each arena, and you can even position them on top of Dahaad for additional damage.
It’s important to mention that you can prepare these barriers beforehand for a secure location, but this might make it more difficult to spot Jin Dahaad as he charges his attack. Furthermore, if your teammates fail to notice your actions, they won’t be aware of which direction to move.
Other Jin Dahaad attacks to watch out for
- Hanging from the ceiling: This only happens in one of the fight’s later arenas, but Dahaad will climb a structure in the middle of the ceiling and rain down ice breath on you. I suggest riding around on your Seikret to avoid this. After three breath attacks, you can use your Hook Slinger to pull down the structure Dahaad is entwined around, causing big damage as it drops.
- AoE breath attacks: Though Dahaad has a lot of breath attacks in pretty much all directions, the ones to really watch out for are when it breathes straight down in front of its face, since this creates a massive AoE explosion. Also watch for when it breathes straight ahead while you’re standing in front of it at a distance. It’s generally better to stay close to Dahaad’s hindlegs and rear.
- Freezing you in place: This is a big AoE which can freeze your character in place, meaning you have to break free. This isn’t a breath attack but is more like a frost that Dahaad emits from its body. If you spot it starting to build, hop on your Seikret and get away from it.
Jin Dahaad weaknesses
icons showing a higher number indicate greater damage effectiveness, where 1 is the least and 4 is the most. Elements not specified do not provide any additional damage.
Given that Jin Dahaad is a creature made of ice, your most effective strategy would be to use a weapon that emits fire and can inflict either bludgeoning or slashing damage. Target the head, neck, or legs as these areas are vulnerable. However, be cautious when aiming at the head as it’s risky; instead, consider attacking around the hindlegs and tail. If you successfully knock Dahaad down, you’ll have an opportunity to perform a Focus Strike on its head or the ridges above its hindlegs without fear of retaliation. It’s also important to note that you can sever its tail if necessary. Despite its size, remember that the tail can be targeted as well.
In the part discussing attacks, it’s stated that when Dahaad perches upon a platform over the arena and launches icy blasts, you can bring down the supporting pillar after it assaults thrice for substantial damage. Additionally, you may topple the floating ice blocks to inflict extra damage, though this move carries a degree of risk since you’ll have to conceal yourself behind one when Dahaad executes its one-shot attack from above.
