How to Evolve Budew and Roselia into Roserade in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

How to Evolve Budew and Roselia into Roserade in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

As a seasoned Pokémon Trainer with over two decades of battling under my belt, I must say that Roserade is one of those rare evolutions that truly shines in the game – pun intended! This beautiful Grass/Poison type Pokemon has an impressive set of base stats and a versatile moveset that makes it a formidable ally in any Trainer’s roster.

Previously, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl featured two forms of Pokemon Roselia – its pre-evolution stage and evolved form. Given this, it’s only logical to expect the Roselia lineage to resurface in both Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

For trainers who selected Turtwig as their starter in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, they might find little use for the Grass/Poison type Pokemon, Roselia. Unlike Turtwig and its evolutionary line, the Roselia family shines in Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. However, obtaining Budew or Roselia and then evolving it into Roserade can be a lengthy process.

Where to Find Budew

Budew Location in BDSP

Budew can be discovered in various locations such as Route 204, Route 212, Eterna Forest, the Grand Underground, and the Safari Zone. If you’re aiming to find Budew in the wild, it’s best to search during the day or morning hours. Budew can also be found at night, but the chances are less. The level of Budew can vary depending on where you catch it.

  • Route 204 is north of Jubilife City. Search the tall grass near the lakes (Route 204, south area), and you have a 15-25% chance of getting Budew.
  • Route 212 is south of Hearthome City.
  • You’ll need to go through Eterna Forest after defeating Mars at the Valley Windworks. It’s between Eterna City and Route 205.
  • Budew also spawns in the Safari Zone in all Areas. It’s generally not recommended to get Budew through the Great Marsh/Safari Zone due to its flee rate and that it has a 10% spawn chance during the Morning and Day, and 0% chance at Night.
  • Budew has a chance of appearing in the Sunlit Cavern and Grassland Cave hideaways in the Grand Underground.

If you want Budew early, then it’s recommended you catch one from Route 204.

How to Raise Friendship

To make Budew transform into Roselia, it needs to reach a higher level only when it has a strong bond with you. The fastest way to boost this bond in ‘Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’ is by taking Budew out of its Poké Ball (using the “Walk Together” function). To access this feature, visit Amity Square located in Hearthome City first with a compatible Pokémon (the Sinnoh Starters are eligible). After leaving the city, you can now let your Pokémon walk beside you most places you go.

You can also feed Budew vitamins (ex: Calcium, Carbos) and Rare Candy. There are also stat-decreasing berries that raise friendship. They are:

  • Pomeg Berry: Lowers HP EV by 10 points.
  • Kelpsy Berry: Lowers Attack EV by 10 points.
  • Hondew Berry: Lowers Special Attack EV by 10 points.
  • Qualot Berry: Lowers Defense EV by 10 points.
  • Grepa Berry: Lowers Special Defense EV by 10.
  • Tamato Berry: Lowers Speed EV by 10.

Using certain berries that lower EV (Effort Values) can be quite beneficial if you’re aiming to train the stats of your Pokemon. For instance, Budew benefits from Kelpsy Berries which increase its friendship. Notably, the base Attack stat for Budew and its evolutionary line isn’t particularly high to start with. Instead, they mainly attack using special moves.

As a gamer, I’d advise against using medicinal herbs such as the Revival Herb on my character, since it decreases their friendship level by 5 points.

A simple and natural way to build friendship with a Pokemon could be by having a chat with the woman in Veilstone City. She offers a massage (once daily) to a Pokemon of your choice, which you can access. Her house is situated on the hill that leads to the Gym of Veilstone City; it’s the first one on the right side as you ascend.

Where to Find Roselia

Elevating Budew might be challenging for certain trainers, but take heart! You can catch Roselia out in the wild or in the Grand Underground. Roselia is found in various locations: the Trophy Garden, Routes 212, 221, 224-225, and 229.

  • Route 212 is south of Hearthome City, the same location where you can catch Budew.
  • The Trophy Garden is in the Pokemon Mansion, which is also on Route 212.
  • Route 221 can only be reached with Surf. It’s located south of Sandgem Town, between Route 220 and Pal Park.
  • Route 224-225 is to the right of Victory Road. You won’t be able to get here until you have the National Dex.
  • Route 229 is north of the Resort Area, which is also locked off until the postgame.
  • You can also find Roselia in the Sunlight Cavern and Grassland Cave hideawaysin the Grand Underground.

For individuals aiming to find Roselia at a lower level, it’s recommended to explore the Trophy Garden and Route 212. You can expect Roselia encountered in these zones to be approximately level 17.

How to Evolve Roselia into Roserade

Shiny Stone Locations

In order to transform Roselia into its ultimate form, Roserade, you’ll require a special item known as a Shimmering Gemstone. This item isn’t available early on in the game; instead, you’ll find it in later stages. The Shimmering Gemstone can be discovered in these specific locations:

  • Iron Island: Take the western exit on B2F, ride the elevator, and there will be a Shiny Stone in the right “branch” of the floor. If you take the left path, it’ll lead you outside Iron Island, which is inaccessible from the front.
  • Route 228: Ride your bike along the bottom narrow bridge to reach the hill with a Shiny Stone.

In Roselia, you can transform into Roserade right away, but remember that Roserade won’t pick up new skills through leveling up. If you want Roserade to learn moves like it did as a Roselia, you’ll need to visit the Move Tutor in Pastoria City. Each time you learn a move, it will cost one Heart Scale.

Should You Use Roserade?

How Good is Roserade?

How to Evolve Budew and Roselia into Roserade in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Roserade is a versatile Pokémon with impressive base stats, but you may evolve your Roselia late in the game. If you prefer to evolve Roselia earlier, transfer Roserade to Sword, Shield, Scarlet, or Violet games and use a Shiny Stone there. The pros of Roserade lie primarily in its Speed and Special Attack, with many special moves in its repertoire reflecting this. Its Grass/Poison dual typing offers unique coverage that most grass Pokémon lack, and it can learn poison moves effective against fairy types.

Here’s more information you’ll want to know about Roserade:

HP: 60
Attack: 70
Special Attack: 125
Defense: 65
Special Defense: 105
Speed: 90
Total: 515

Due to Roserade’s base stats, the most suitable Nature for it is Timid (-Attack, +Speed). But don’t feel restricted; you can still make do with a Modest (+Special Attack, -Attack) or even a Calm (+Special Defense, -Attack), if you prefer to prioritize its Special Attack or Special Defense growth respectively.

Super-effective against: Water, Ground, Rock, Fairy, Grass
Weaknesses: Fire, Flying, Ice, Psychic
Resistances: Grass, Water, Electric, Fighting, Fairy
Immunities: N/A
Natural Cure: Roserade’s status conditions are cured when it’s swapped out with another Pokemon.
Poison Point: Pokemon that make physical contact with Roserade in battle have a 30% chance of being afflicted with the poison status condition.
Technician (Hidden): Powers up Roserade’s weaker moves.

Recommeded Moves for Roserade

  • Because of its dual-typing, Sludge Bomb is an absolute must for Roserade. This is a special Poison-type move that has a 30% chance of poisoning the target, 100% accuracy, and 90 power. This will make it very useful against (most) Fairy-type Pokemon.
  • Energy Ball is another good move for Roserade. This has 100% accuracy, a power of 90, and has a 10% chance of loweirng the opponent’s Special Defense. You can teach Roserade this move by using a TM53.
  • Toxic Spikes is good to have if you’re using Roserade to set up hazards for your opponent. This causes the opponent’s Pokemon to be badly poisoned when swapped in.
  • The last move for Roserade can be your own choice, but you may want to consider Dazzling Gleam. This is a Fairy-type move with a power of 80 and an accuracy of 100%. It doesn’t have any secondary effects, but a Fairy-type move gives Roserade an advantage over most Dark, Dragon, and Fighting-type Pokemon. Roserade can learn Dazzling Gleam with TM21 in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl.
