How to Find & Tame Wild Horses in Crimson Desert

It’s surprisingly easy to tame wild horses in Crimson Desert once you know the trick! Simply approach and try to mount a horse, then gently guide your movement towards its rear while keeping an eye on your stamina. If you do it right, a progress bar will fill up, and the horse will be tamed when it’s full.

While it seems simple in theory, mastering this takes some practice. Horses are easily spooked, so good timing is important, and you’ll also need to carefully manage your stamina. Once you learn how to do it, you’ll be able to tame powerful horses in Crimson Desert much sooner.

Where to Find Wild Horses Early in Crimson Desert

You won’t have to travel far to find wild horses. Even early in the Crimson Desert, you’ll see several groups roaming around, particularly near Hernand.

You can reliably find Wild Horses just outside Hernand Town. Check grassy areas close to streams or on the other side of the river, especially near cliffs. They usually appear in small groups, giving you a few to select from.

A good place to start the game is a small island southeast of Hernand. You can usually find two groups of horses there – one on the north side and another on the south.

If the horses scatter when you approach, you can reset the area by advancing time and returning.

From the beginning, it’s a good idea to consider what kind of horse you want. Breeds like Brianto, Herspia, and Priden can be found here, and each one has unique strengths and abilities. Plus, they come in various colors and appearances, so if you want a horse that looks just right, take the time to find one you really like.

How to Tame Wild Horses in Crimson Desert

Approach the Horse Carefully

A common mistake players make is running directly towards a wild horse. These horses in Crimson Desert are easily spooked. If they sense you coming too soon, they’ll bolt before you have a chance to ride them.

It’s best to move slowly and deliberately. When you can, approach from a low position and from behind, as this minimizes the chance of startling the animal. The aim is to get near enough to start a response, but without frightening the horse.

If the horse sees you, don’t worry! Now’s the time to run. Get close enough to jump on quickly before it gets away. It might take a little practice, but you’ll soon learn how to do it.

Use Food for Easier Taming

Instead of trying to chase wild horses, which can be really difficult, you can use food to attract them and get them to come to you peacefully. This makes the whole process much easier.

You can purchase treats like hay, carrots, and sugar beets from merchants who sell saddles. Once you have these, equip the treat from your inventory and choose the “Take Out” option. This will make your character visibly hold the food, making your horse less likely to bolt.

Once you’re near the horse, simply place the food on the ground. It will instinctively go to eat, which creates a good chance for you to easily get on its back.

Play the Taming Minigame

Getting on the horse is just the first step. It won’t be tamed right away. You’ll have to play a quick game to show you can control it and manage your energy.

A meter will appear on your screen, and your goal is to fill it up. To do this, consistently move your character towards the horse’s back end. It might seem strange at first, but you’ll quickly get the hang of it with a little practice.

When photographing a horse, if its tail is facing away from you, move closer. If it turns and its rear end faces your camera, step back. Because the horse is constantly moving and twisting, you’ll need to react quickly and adjust your position as it bucks.

A useful tip is to keep the camera aimed at the horse’s rear and hold the backward movement button while you adjust the camera. This helps you stay on course and makes controlling the horse much easier.

Manage Stamina While Taming

When taming, watch your stamina! Holding the correct direction to fill the taming meter uses stamina, and if it runs out, you’ll be bucked off. Luckily, the horse won’t run far right away, so you can quickly try to get back on and continue taming without starting from the beginning. To help with this, avoid extra button presses and keep your directional input steady. The more consistently you hold the correct direction, the less stamina you’ll lose fixing errors.

What To Do After Taming a Horse in Crimson Desert?

When the taming meter is full, the horse is officially tamed. After that, you’ll have a few choices: you can register and ride the horse right away, register it and send it to your stable, or just take it for a ride without saving it.

If you want to keep your horse long-term, registering it is essential. This allows you to call for it whenever you need it and buy supplies from stable vendors. If you don’t register and simply ride the horse, it will only be available for a limited time and won’t come when you call.

It’s smart to register horses with good abilities right away, even if you’re not using them right now. This lets you keep a variety of horses and easily switch to the one that best fits what you’re trying to do.

Although you can buy horses at stables, taming them is usually a better choice. It’s cheaper, available early in the game, and lets you choose the specific horse you want. Because wild horses are plentiful and fairly easy to catch once you learn how, most players will likely enjoy taming more.
