Getting a dog in Outbound isn’t just about having a loyal companion – they also offer helpful advantages. Here’s a guide on how to adopt a dog and how they can assist you during your camper van journey.
Where to Find a Dog in Outbound
You’ll be able to get a dog after you progress to the second area of the game. To get there, exit through the rock tunnel in the northeast corner of the starting area. Follow the road into the new area until you reach a signal tower. Behind the tower, you’ll find a path that leads to a building – that’s where you can get your dog!
Okay, so I just went into this place called Paws & Whiskers Lodge. I need to grab a few things inside – like a dog treat – and then head out the back door into this fenced-in yard. Seems pretty straightforward!
There are four dogs here, each with a different color. To adopt one, simply walk up to the dog you like and press the A button on Xbox or the X button on PlayStation. This will let you name your new companion and finalize the adoption.
After you’ve decided on a dog to adopt and confirmed their name, that decision is final – you can’t change their name or switch to a different dog. Also, you’re limited to adopting just one dog, even if you’d like to take them all home.
What Does Your Dog Do in Outbound?
Okay, so the coolest thing right away is my dog gets a backpack! Seriously, it helps me carry stuff. When I’ve got items, I just walk up to my pup and give them some – they can hold up to 10 at first. And get this, I can actually upgrade that backpack at the Sewing Table once I get the blueprints. It’s a game changer!
Okay, so you can actually pet your dog in the game! I found out you just press RB (on Xbox) or R1 (on PlayStation) and then choose the ‘Pet’ option. It doesn’t do anything gameplay-wise, it just lets you show your furry friend some love. When you use those buttons, you’ll also see a few other commands you can give your dog right away.

Seriously, just adopting any of them gets you the ‘Fur-Ever Friend’ achievement, and the very first time you pet your new pup, you’ll unlock ‘Can you Pet the Dog?’ – it’s super easy!
