To survive in the pirate world of Windrose, you’ll need to find lots of resources. At first, you’ll be gathering basics like wood, plant fibers, and food. But as you progress, you’ll need to find even more to keep going.
You can never have too much clay! It’s essential for building many structures in your base. Without it, you can’t make furnaces or kilns, which are needed to process metal ores.
Wondering where to find clay in Windrose and what it’s used for? Here’s a complete guide.
How to Find and Harvest Clay

Honestly, clay in Windrose is really easy to miss. I kept walking right over it when I first started playing, and even now, after a bunch of hours, I still occasionally don’t notice it because it blends in with the ground so well.
You can find clay by searching for large patches of muddy, brown rock, usually close to the island shores. You won’t have to go far inland to collect it.
Clay is usually found where forests meet grassy or sandy areas, so focus your search near these locations on the islands. Keep an eye on your mini-map, as clay deposits are sometimes marked there too.
Clay is a common material in Windrose, so you can mine it with any pickaxe – you don’t need a special one.
You’ll need three stone and three wood to make a simple pickaxe. But I suggest making a copper pickaxe as quickly as you can – it lets you gather clay much faster and with less effort.
You usually get about 50 clay from each deposit, but larger areas can yield up to 80. Always mine the entire deposit when you find one.
Clay will eventually reappear, but it takes a while – similar to how other resources work in Windrose. I don’t know the exact respawn time, but you can usually find several clay deposits around each island.
What is Clay Used For?
Windrose offers a huge variety of items you can craft to build the base of your dreams. Clay is an essential resource, as you’ll need it to create structures vital for surviving.

Clay is a versatile material that can be shaped into useful objects like kilns, furnaces, stoves, and even decorative items. Kilns and furnaces are especially important, as they’re essential for many crafting processes.
Kilns create both charcoal and ash. The charcoal produced is then burned to power furnaces, which are essential for smelting ores – like copper – into materials used for crafting weapons.
You won’t need a huge amount of clay in Windrose, but it’s good to have some on hand so you can build new bases on the islands you explore.
