How To Use Runes In Bloodborne

As a seasoned gamer who’s dabbled in both the dark and blood-soaked worlds of Yharnam and Lordran, I can confidently say that the hunt for runes in Bloodborne is as grueling yet rewarding as tracking down those blasted bonfires in Dark Souls.

In the game Bloodborne, runes function similarly to rings in the Dark Souls series. Players can simultaneously equip up to four runes, and all four slots are accessible from the moment they can equip runes.

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent delving into dark, mysterious worlds, I can attest that the intricacies of gameplay mechanics are often what set apart truly immersive experiences from mere time-wasters. In this particular adventure, players will embark on a quest to find and equip runes, powerful artifacts that can dramatically enhance their abilities. However, I’ve found that many newcomers may struggle to fully grasp the process due to its somewhat hidden nature.

Where To Find The Witch Of Hemwick

In the small town of Hemwick, you’ll encounter the infamous Witch of Hemwick. This character can be found in the Hemwick Charnel Lane, a side area that players may explore before engaging with Vicar Amelia. To get there, start from the lantern at Hemwick Charnel Lane and descend the stairs. Follow the path ahead and climb the stairs located further up the hill. Keep on fighting as you ascend until you encounter a closed gate that can’t be opened. Turn around then, taking the path to your left. Make your first turn down the slope filled with gravestones.

Once you’ve reached the foot of the hill, proceed by taking the path to your right, then descend using the elevator on your right and return to the area preceding the Lantern. From there, use the elevator again and move forward along the bridge, followed by ascending into the farmhouse. In the rear of the farmhouse, you’ll find a ladder that climbs up to the roof. Proceed by walking along the left side of the rooftop to continue your journey.

Keep a sharp eye out, I was caught off guard once by an adversary lurking nearby who knocked me off a ledge during their initial strike. Be vigilant!

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “The roof I’m standing on connects to a slope that eventually leads to a silo. Players can use this to access the area below. To my left, there’s a gate you can open for an easier shortcut back to the lantern. The Witch of Hemwick is right ahead, located in the building at the hilltop if you follow the path to the left.”

Fighting The Witch Of HemwickHow To Use Runes In Bloodborne

  • Low overall defenses to all damage types
  • Slightly lower defense against arcane, but a very small difference overall.

In this battle, the primary twist lies in the fact that one of the characters is invisible and hiding somewhere within the room, revealing herself only when approached closely. Meanwhile, a towering, menacing shadow figure will persistently be summoned to pursue you. Additionally, there’s another character who emerges after the first one is defeated. These two can revive each other if you take too much time between attacks. To triumph in this fight, it’s best to ignore the visible adversaries and stick to the edge of the room to locate the invisible characters. When found, swiftly attack a few times until she teleports, then keep running to elude the shadow figures. Overall, success in this battle hinges on your ability to move quickly and maintain distance from the damaging enemies.

How To Equip Runes In Bloodborne

After overcoming the Witch of Hemwick, you’ll find a corpse in a hidden room at the back of the building, clinging to the Rune Workshop Tool. With this item in your possession, make your way back to the Hunter’s Dream and into the workshop. Head towards the Memory Altar at the rear section to interact with it.

In this setup, the first three slots in your memory can hold any common rune you choose, and you can access all of these slots simultaneously. The last slot is exclusively for Oath Runes, which become accessible as soon as you acquire them. Oath Runes are scarce, frequently linked to side missions or joining guilds, and provide more substantial benefits than the majority of basic runes. You’re free to swap any rune in and out of these slots at the Memory Altar without any fees or limitations.
