Hytale Developers Taking Legal Action Against Switch Copycat Game

A game clearly imitating Hytale, called Hytale: Sandbox RPG, is facing legal challenges, as announced by Hypixel Studios CEO Simon Collins-Laflamme. This copycat RPG, which uses a similar name and style to Hytale, showed up on the Nintendo eShop in April, but it isn’t connected to the original Hytale game made by Hypixel Studios.

So, Hytale actually started as a spin-off from the huge Minecraft server, Hypixel. Then, things got a bit crazy – Riot Games bought the whole thing in 2020, but later cancelled the project and shut down Hypixel Studios. Luckily, the original creator, Collins-Laflamme, bought it all back! Now, it launched in early access back in January 2026 and it’s been a massive hit – one of the best indie releases of the year so far. They’re still actively updating it with new patches, so it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more development for a while yet.

Buyer Beware: a Hytale Knock-Off is on the Nintendo eShop

With the renewed interest in Hytale, a copycat game has appeared, attempting to trick players. Called Hypixel: Sandbox RPG, it launched on the Nintendo eShop on April 10th and was created by RoVi Ninen, a studio with no connection to the creators of Hytale, Hypixel Studios. The copycat game uses images that look similar to Hytale‘s artwork, potentially misleading Nintendo eShop users into believing it’s a console version of the original game. Hypixel Studios confirmed their legal team is addressing the issue, but haven’t provided further details.

As of today, Hytale: Sandbox RPG is still available for purchase on the Nintendo eShop for $4.99, a discounted price that lasts until April 24th. While this is significantly cheaper than the full PC version of Hytale ($19.99), it’s important to know that the official Hytale game is currently only released for Windows, macOS, and Linux computers, and there are no plans to bring it to consoles. Despite the low price, Hytale: Sandbox RPG hasn’t made it onto Nintendo’s list of best-selling games. Currently, popular titles like Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Pokemon Pokopia, and Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are topping the charts on the US Nintendo eShop.

The Hytale Copycat Creators Have Done This Before

The team behind the game Hytale: Sandbox RPG has previously pointed out similarities between their game and other indie titles. After the success of CloverPit by Panik Arcade, RoVi Ninen released Coin Pit, a game with a very similar name and concept. This led Panik Arcade to warn players against buying the copycat game when it launched on iOS in September 2025, and again when Coin Pit became popular on the Nintendo eShop in January 2026. CloverPit is currently available on PC and mobile, with console versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Like Hytale, CloverPit has no current plans to release on Nintendo consoles.

So, Hytale got a pretty big update back in late March – the fourth major one for early access! It added a bunch of cool new stuff to play around with. The developers are still working on things like friend lists and making it easier to find servers, so I’m really curious to see what they come up with in the next update. I’m hoping for even more content!
