I’m Still A Bit Worried About Elden Ring Nightreign

Wasn’t Elden Ring well-known a couple of years back? Contrary to popular belief, it was quite noticeable, not overlooked, and its additional content was highly appreciated. In reality, it wasn’t as unnoticed as you might think.

By this point, Elden Ring has become a well-known title in the gaming community, perhaps even surpassing the recognition of Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Standing tall alongside industry titans such as Skyrim and Breath of the Wild, FromSoftware has proven its prowess with a string of beloved games, including Sekiro which was named Game of the Year prior to Elden Ring’s release. However, Elden Ring sets itself apart from the rest. Some might say it has entered the realm of “mainstream” gaming, attracting a broader audience beyond hardcore gamers.

I’m not implying that you have to be part of the FromSoftware elite to appreciate these games; quite the contrary, I encourage you to give them a try, they’re fantastic. Elden Ring has indeed grown into something massive, even receiving multiple anticipation awards before its release. So it’s no wonder that a spin-off is in the works, but somehow, it still feels surprising, doesn’t it?

Nothing is Confusing About Nightreign, Though

It’s common for popular games to produce spin-offs, like Final Fantasy Tactics, Pokemon Snap, and Doctor Mario. In fact, if you examine Mario’s entire catalog, you could easily compile a list of the top ten video game spin-offs. So what makes Elden Ring Nightreign so special? Simply put, because Elden Ring is already a significant title to begin with.

Elden Ring: Nightreign stands independently as its own game, stemming from an alternate timeline, and it supports cooperative play among three players.

Although I’ve experienced it, spoken with Video Producer Cristian Macias following his extended play session, and am aware that I will find enjoyment in it, there’s still an unfamiliar feeling I can’t quite put my finger on. In other words, while I anticipate enjoying it, I’m uncertain about how exactly I feel towards it at this moment.

I didn’t play any of the betas or playtests, so I’ve had zero hands-on time with the game myself.

I’m deeply enthusiastic about the Souls series and the genre in general, with titles like Hollow Knight and Lies of P being among my favorites. I also enjoy a variety of roguelikes such as Risk of Rain, Slay the Spire, and Hades. Yet, despite others trying to blend these elements before, this is FromSoftware we’re talking about – it’s Elden Ring. However, I find myself not as excited as expected.

It’s Just Kind Of… Underwhelming?

The issue is, I can’t seem to understand why I’m not thrilled about this game. It’s a blend of genres that I enjoy, produced by a studio I admire, set in a world I adore, and it’s already been confirmed as excellent. Elden Ring will undoubtedly generate a lot of buzz during The Game Awards, but for now, I’m unsure about my stance on the discussion. I know I’ll like it, that much is certain, but there’s a possibility that this amalgamation of things I love might not resonate with me? Or maybe it will.
