Great news for fighting game fans: a new Mortal Kombat is coming! Mortal Kombat 1 successfully rebooted the series with its signature over-the-top violence, so another installment wasn’t unexpected. Mortal Kombat remains a hugely popular and successful fighting game franchise. However, fans of NetherRealm’s other games might be a little disappointed to see a focus on this series again.
Last month, Mortal Kombat 1 sold 8 million copies, and the new Mortal Kombat 2 movie is further growing the franchise’s reach beyond gaming. While a sequel to Mortal Kombat 1 seemed likely, its announcement means fans of NetherRealm Studios might have to face the fact that Injustice 3 isn’t currently in development, and may not be for some time. Though anything could happen, another installment in the Injustice series seems less probable now.
As Mortal Kombat Continues to Get Love, Injustice 3 Feels Like It’s Destined to Remain in Limbo
As a big fan, I’ve been hearing whispers about Injustice 3 for ages! Honestly, even before Mortal Kombat 1 was announced, a lot of us were expecting Injustice 3 to be NetherRealm’s next game. It’s been nearly ten years since Injustice 2 came out in 2017, and the studio hasn’t really said anything official about a third game. Right now, all we have is speculation, fan theories, and rumors – it’s a long way from a real announcement, but we’re still hoping!

Years of Leaks Leave Injustice Fans Hopeful
The positive reception and success of Mortal Kombat 1 have increased excitement for a new Injustice game. Adding superheroes like Homelander from The Boys and Omni-Man from Invincible as downloadable content further boosted those hopes. While these characters aren’t from the DC Universe like those in Injustice, their inclusion in Mortal Kombat 1 gave players a taste of what a potential Injustice 3 could offer.
Rumors about Injustice 3 have been building, fueled by several leaks. Last year, voice actors Phil LaMarr and George Newbern seemingly discussed working on the game at fan events. More recently, in April, a Warner Bros. Games artist listed Injustice 3 on their resume, further convincing fans that the game is coming soon.
Despite No Word on Injustice 3, All Hope May Not Be Lost
I’m trying to stay positive, and the idea of a new Injustice game is definitely exciting. However, it might take a while before we see one. Ed Boon recently told Collider that the next game will be another Mortal Kombat title, which makes sense with the new movie on the way. It’s just a shame they didn’t use this moment to build some buzz about other potential projects from the studio.
If Ed Boon was hinting at Injustice 3, you’d expect him to have shared more details in the interview. He did mention NetherRealm is working on something beyond Mortal Kombat, but it’s unclear what that is. While it could be Injustice 3, and it might even release before the next Mortal Kombat game, that’s just as uncertain. It’s also possible NetherRealm will create a completely new game instead of continuing the Injustice series. Only time will tell, and figuring out who would be in Injustice 3 seems a long way off, because we don’t even know if the game is confirmed. There have been leaks suggesting it was in development, but those should be viewed skeptically, as plans can change.
Although a new Mortal Kombat game is in development, Ed Boon hasn’t announced when we can expect it to come out.
This Year Hopefully Proves Me Wrong, But My Gut Tells Me to Keep Expectations in Check
I’ve been a DC Comics fan since childhood, and I really believe the Injustice games could become something even bigger. They’re already some of the best superhero games out there, and there’s tons of source material for the developers to use. While we’re already halfway through the year, there are still some major events coming up. It’s good to be cautious about Injustice 3, but I’m still hoping for some exciting announcements in the future.
If Injustice 3 is Happening, a Summer Announcement Would Be Ideal
Summer Game Fest, happening on June 5th, is shaping up to be a major gaming event, and many are hoping NetherRealm will use it to finally announce Injustice 3. While The Game Awards later this year is another possibility, a summer reveal would be a welcome surprise. However, there’s currently no real evidence to suggest that will happen, and even I’m just speculating at this point.
So, I’m really hyped for James Gunn’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow coming out on June 26th. It would be amazing if NetherRealm dropped an Injustice 3 announcement – maybe even with some DLC tying into the movie – before then. That’d be a perfect way to build buzz, but honestly, I’m probably getting ahead of myself hoping for that.
Right now, fans of the Injustice series are simply going to have to be patient. Several major superhero games are already scheduled for release this year, and some are already out. Invincible VS just launched, and later this year we’ll see Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine. While a new DC game would be exciting for fans of superheroes and comics, releasing too many games at once could overwhelm the market. Don’t give up hope for Injustice 3, but it’s best to keep expectations realistic until NetherRealm officially hints at the game. The situation feels similar to when Mortal Kombat 1 was announced, when many people thought NetherRealm would make another Injustice game first. So, while Mortal Kombat fans are enjoying a new game, Injustice fans will have to wait – for now.
