Internet Computer Teases Latest Evolution In AI Smart Contract Engine

Just over a month after discussing the launch of the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on blockchain technology and represented through smart contracts, Internet Computer (ICP) has signaled significant advancements in this area.

Internet Computer Is Advancing AI Smart Contract Capabilities

In a recent post on X’s platform, Dominic Williams, the founder of ICP (Internet Computer Protocol), drew attention to the rapid advancement of AI-driven smart contracts on the protocol. He commended DFinity’s team for their significant contributions to the smart contract engine, explaining that it has boosted deterministic floating point instructions by a factor of ten.

“Williams expressed that we persist in our goal to manage complex Large Language Models as intelligent contracts. In the demonstration, the image classification process is now three times faster (approximating a 30-40% reduction in blocks through consensus versus the previous 10-12). Correspondingly, the expenses for gas or cycles used in AI inference have decreased accordingly.”

The team managed to boost their speed significantly by carrying out extensive foundational work, which encompasses contributions to the open-source Wasmtime engine for running WebAssembly.

Greetings! Get ready for a significant surge in the deployment of AI-driven smart contracts on the Internet Computer blockchain, marked by remarkable acceleration.
The @dfinity team’s exceptional work has boosted deterministic floating point instructions by a factor of ten. We remain committed to executing complex Legal-Legible Model (LLM) logic as smart contracts.

The upcoming optimization is expected to push the protocol farther than it already is.

Notable is ICP‘s significant investment in AI technology, drawing it nearer to rival industry leaders such as OpenAI, Google, and Cognition Labs – the pioneers of the first AI software engineer named Devin.

More Features To Come on ICP AI Innovation

In the following enhancement, we will implement SIMD instructions in the smart contract execution process on the Internet Computer, as previously mentioned by them.

Over time, executing a single instruction will enable multiple floating point calculations to be carried out simultaneously. Furthermore, there are intentions to transition the ICP smart contract environment from 32-bit Wasm to 64-bit Wasm. This upgrade is expected to increase the number of AI model weights that can be accommodated in contract memory, as stated by the ICP founder, “from 2GB to an amount sufficient for advanced large language models.” Moreover, the ICP team will introduce new APIs, enabling canister smart contracts to export AI computations for enhanced processing on GPUs.

ICP’s dedication to enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities is clear from these plans. Releasing the Internet Computer AI in March was essential for demonstrating DFINITY’s vision of having large language models operate as smart contracts on the ICP. The Internet Computer AI currently operates on ICP’s testnet, but developers have the ability to move the code to the main network for public use.
