The recent emergence of Trump Coin (DJT) on the Solana blockchain has certainly piqued my interest, but it’s important to approach this new meme coin with caution.
The cryptocurrency world has been set abuzz by the appearance of a fresh meme coin called “Trump Coin” (ticker: DJT) on the Solana blockchain, which features the initials of the former American president. The coin reportedly began with a market capitalization of $73 million, according to SolScan’s data. However, doubts and uncertainties surround its authenticity and origins as the crypto community clamors for clarification.
Real Or Fake? Trump Memecoin Sparks Frenzy
As an analyst, I’ve come across some intriguing information regarding the initials “DJT” shared by Donald Trump’s media company (NASDAQ: DJT). However, it’s essential to clarify that there is no official confirmation linking the former US President to this coin. The origin of this rumor can be traced back to a tweet from The Pirate Wires’ X account on Monday. Initially, this post was tagged as “fake news,” but interestingly enough, that label has since been removed. It is crucial to exercise caution and verify any information before drawing definitive conclusions.
Mike Solana, holding the positions of Editor-in-Chief at The Pirate Wires and Chief Marketing Officer at Founders Fund, clarified that he hadn’t had a direct conversation with Donald Trump himself, but rather was sharing information obtained from reliable sources. Furthermore, an earlier post on X suggested Barron Trump, aged 18, as the driving force behind the token initiative.
Tom Shaughnessy from Delphi Ventures expressed concerns about the DJT Coin – LP due to several warning signs. The liquidity pool was not secured, funding came from Kucoin, the contract was not typical, there was only one source for wires, and the top ownership was heavily concentrated at 67%. Shaughnessy advised caution, implying that these factors raised suspicions of a scam.
Blockchain analytics firms like Bubblemaps have raised additional alarms. A disproportionate amount of the token’s supply—67%—is concentrated in a single cluster, with the largest holder being Raydium Concentrated Liquidity, controlling 43% of the supply. Such a concentration in ownership typically suggests potential for market manipulation or a lack of a decentralized consensus mechanism, undermining the ethos of blockchain transparency and trust.
David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine and Trump’s Bitcoin advisor, expressed concern via X: “If the DJT Solana memcoin is a hoax, the person responsible should be publicly shamed and banned from our industry permanently. This action would send a clear message to the President and his team that we are a risk rather than an advantage.”
The arrival of DJT significantly impacted the prices of various Trump-themed memecoins. For instance, the MAGA token or TRUMP (associated with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign) experienced a 55% price decrease at one point. Similarly, TROG, which is a coin featuring a frog wearing a MAGA hat, also underwent price declines, although to a lesser extent.
There’s growing buzz about DJT’s connection to cryptocurrencies, as Donald Trump has publicly expressed his support and identified himself as a “crypto president.” Over the past two weeks, he has advocated for all remaining Bitcoin to be mined within US borders. With the upcoming US presidential election approaching, the potential impact of cryptocurrencies on the political landscape is under heightened scrutiny. Additionally, rumors indicate that President Biden will attend a Bitcoin-centric roundtable next month.
