Summary
- Crossover characters like Spawn and Witchblade did not appear in Invincible Season 3 due to logistical complexities.
- Fans may or may not see them in Season 4, since Robert Kirkman and Image really want the crossover characters on the show.
- Introducing them subtly through mentions or brief appearances in the background might be the best approach to include the crossover characters in Invincible.
The series “Invincible” boasts an expansive universe filled with superheroes, villains, and secondary characters. Notably, certain individuals featured in the crossovers are conspicuously absent from the show itself. Co-creator Robert Kirkman sheds light on the reasoning behind this decision.
The animated series titled “Invincible,” available on Amazon Prime Video, is an adaptation from Kirkman’s comic book series with illustrations by Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, published by Image Comics. It debuted on March 26, 2021, receiving a 98% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Seasons 2 and 3 were released in November 2023 and February 2025, respectively, both earning critical acclaim with a perfect score of 100% on the same platform. Fans have been enjoying the show but have expressed curiosity regarding the lack of crossover characters, particularly during the “Invincible War” episode, which was a significant crossover event in the comics.
One aspect that makes watching Invincible enjoyable is the diverse cast of characters in its storyline. Yet, viewers have pointed out that some crossover characters such as Spawn (Al Simmons), Savage Dragon (Officer Dragon), The Darkness (Jackie Estacado), Witchblade (Sara Pezzini), ShadowHawk, Pitt, Madman, and others are conspicuously absent in “Invincible War.” Kirkman discussed with Image, the comic publisher, about incorporating these characters into the series, and they reportedly showed interest. However, it was determined that including them would push back the third season’s release, so the idea was abandoned by Kirkman, who stated:
“There were definitely discussions held regarding their inclusion.
Ultimately, due to its intricate nature and potential for prolonged duration without guaranteed success, the idea was deemed impractical and abandoned. Most folks at Image seemed to share this sentiment, as the practicalities involved made it an utter logistical nightmare. Given the swift pace of production, legal aspects couldn’t be addressed adequately within the required timeframe.
Kirkman expressed his enthusiasm for the idea, stating he was eager to collaborate with actors embodying these characters. His vision was to see these characters breathe life onto television screens, remarking, “That would’ve been quite intriguing.” Unfortunately, this didn’t happen due to factors that simply didn’t align, as Kirkman explained further. Despite Spawn and the rest of the crossover characters not gracing our screens in Invincible Season 3, it appears Kirkman and his team were open to their inclusion in the series. So, one can only speculate whether they might appear in Season 4.
It would be thrilling to see Spawn, Witchblade, Savage Dragon, Pitt, and other notable characters appear in Season 4 of Invincible. Longtime fans are eager to witness these iconic figures intermingling with Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, played by Steven Yeun. Incorporating them into the series would broaden the universe and serve as an enjoyable tribute to fans. Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, has expressed openness towards crossovers, so there shouldn’t be any obstacles in bringing Spawn onto Invincible. However, it’s also plausible that Robert Kirkman might have abandoned the idea due to its complexity.
Season 4 may concentrate on significant storylines such as “Virumite War,” and adding crossover characters could be a distraction. Although it would be exciting to see these characters, it’s essential not to detract from the primary Invincible narrative. Therefore, an effective method of including them in Season 4 would be through creative references, such as a news flash, a newspaper article, or casual dialogue. They should not consume significant screen time and instead serve as subtle nods to fans without overshadowing the main story.
Invincible is already captivating, and if adding crossover characters might complicate matters and divert the audience from the central plot, it’s likely best to keep things as they are.
