It’s Officially the End of an Era for Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Season 9 of Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Ranked Battles is wrapping up, and details for Season 10 have been released. It’s becoming clear that the game is settling into a predictable seasonal pattern, with Season 10 feeling very similar to previous seasons. As the saying goes, a pattern emerges after something happens a third time.

The first seven seasons of Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduced new Mega Stones, which helped attract more players to competitive battling. While Season 8 didn’t include these stones, it was considered a special season, so it wasn’t a major concern. The lack of new stones in Season 9 seemed like a random occurrence, but with Season 10 following the same pattern, it’s now clear that the game’s focus on Ranked Battles intentionally shifted after Season 7. This timing likely coincides with the release of Pokemon Champions and the availability of Pokemon Home transfers in April, suggesting a planned transition.

So, in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, they’ve been rolling out Mega Evolution items each season. Season 1 gave us Greninjite for Mega Greninja, then Season 2 was all about Delphoxite for Mega Delphox, and Season 3 brought Chesnaughtite for Mega Chesnaught. Season 4 added Baxcalibrite to get Mega Baxcalibur. After that, Seasons 5, 6, and 7 were pretty cool – I finally got Blazikenite, Swampertite, and Sceptilite for Mega Blaziken, Swampert, and Sceptile! Honestly, things have been on repeat since then with seasons 8 through 10, but at least I have all the Mega Evolutions now.

While special seasons like the one for Pokemon Legends: Z-A could still happen, it seems less probable now. The Pokemon Company clearly intends for competitive play to focus on Pokemon Champions, as it’s planned to be the main game for future VGC tournaments. It’s possible things could change, but the current Season 10 of Pokemon suggests the series is proceeding with a standard, predictable course.

The next season of Ranked Battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A starts late on April 22nd, 2026 (or early April 23rd for players outside the West Coast), as announced on Pokemon.com. You’ll earn rewards after each battle, plus extra rewards as you rank up and at the end of the season in May.

The Basics of Pokemon Legends: Z-A Ranked Battles

Ranked Battles last for 3 minutes. Whenever a Pokémon is defeated, the player’s Pokémon are fully healed and returned to their starting position. Players can switch their active Pokémon up to three times before one is knocked out, after which the switch limit resets. Players are ranked from first to fourth place based on how many Pokémon they defeat and other in-game actions. These results earn points, and earning enough points for your current rank will promote you to the next one.

In Season 10, you can use Pokémon from the Lumiose Pokédex numbered 1 through 227 and 231, and from the Hyperspace Pokédex numbered 001 through 127, 131, and 132. Pokémon of any level (1 to 100) can be registered, but all Pokémon will be set to level 50 during battles. To keep battles fair, you can’t use two Pokémon with the same Pokédex number, and each Pokémon can only hold one item. Certain Pokémon are not allowed in Ranked Battles.

  • Lumiose Pokedex No. 228 Xerneas
  • Lumiose Pokedex No. 229 Yveltal
  • Lumiose Pokedex No. 230 Zygarde
  • Lumiose Pokedex No. 232 Mewtwo
  • Hyperspace Pokedex No. 128 Kyogre
  • Hyperspace Pokedex No. 129 Groudon
  • Hyperspace Pokedex No. 130 Rayquaza

It’s Not All “Bad News” for Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Even though competitive players might not be thrilled with how straightforward Ranked Battles are in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the game is still fulfilling its role within the Pokemon lineup. It’s clear that, with a limited budget, this game was meant as a bridge to future releases like Pokemon Winds and Waves. It offered fans a taste of what they hoped would be Pokemon Z, connecting to the Pokemon X and Y generation. It kept players engaged while they waited for improvements to competitive battling in Pokemon Champions (though its launch wasn’t very impressive). And it provided a fresh experience before the release of the updated Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch earlier this year.

At the end of the day, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a role-player and what a role-player it is.
