Since the beginning of Dragon Ball Super, Goku and Vegeta have consistently been the strongest Saiyans. While Gohan was once the most powerful character at the end of Dragon Ball Z, Goku and Vegeta quickly exceeded his power after unlocking God Ki in Battle of Gods and Resurrection F. They’ve remained the central fighters in every major storyline, constantly growing stronger as they battle the most powerful threats across the multiverse.
Things shifted dramatically with the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which officially added the incredibly powerful Legendary Super Saiyan to the story—he proved to be stronger than both Goku and Vegeta. Then, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero gave Gohan a new transformation, making him the most powerful Z-Fighter once again. And when the Dragon Ball Super manga continues with the Black Frieza Saga, Goku and Vegeta won’t be the strongest Saiyans anymore. Gohan and Broly are set to take the lead.
The Dragon Ball Super Manga is Phasing Out Goku & Vegeta as the Main Characters
I can’t believe it, but the Granolah Saga feels like the last time we really saw Goku and Vegeta take center stage in Dragon Ball Super. Even then, Granolah was a huge part of the story, and you could argue he was the main character! Since then, both the manga and the Super Hero movie have really focused on Gohan and Piccolo, with Goku and Vegeta taking a backseat. It’s wild to think about how much the focus has shifted!
The ending to the Super Hero Saga continues to highlight Gohan’s growth, making him the central focus. While Goku and Vegeta do appear, it’s primarily to demonstrate the incredible power Gohan has achieved in his Beast form. Though Goku and Vegeta will likely play a key role in the upcoming Black Frieza Saga, Dragon Ball Super has shifted the story to feature a wider cast of characters, moving away from solely centering on Goku and Vegeta as the main heroes.
Interestingly, recent storylines in Dragon Ball Super, like in Chapter 104 of the manga, have focused on Goten and Trunks, largely leaving Goku and Vegeta in the background. Chapter 103 even concluded with a scene of Piccolo waving to the audience, rather than highlighting the two Saiyan heroes. It’s becoming clear that Goku and Vegeta are no longer the central characters of Dragon Ball Super, and with characters like Broly and Gohan becoming more powerful, they aren’t even the strongest Saiyans anymore.
Gohan and Broly Have the Most Potential to Stop Black Frieza
The recent storyline with Granolah concluded with Black Frieza defeating both Goku (in his True Ultra Instinct form) and Vegeta (with Ultra Ego) in a single blow. Since then, Goku and Vegeta have been intensely training to catch up to Black Frieza, which is why they’re spending their time on Beerus’ planet in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. However, both fighters have likely reached their peak potential. Now, they’re focusing on perfecting their strongest abilities and addressing any remaining weaknesses.
Gohan and Broly are significantly more powerful than Goku and Vegeta, particularly when fighting at their absolute limits. Gohan’s ‘Beast’ form makes him the second strongest being in Universe 7, even defeating Goku when he was using Perfected Ultra Instinct. He also assisted Broly in mastering his Full Power Super Saiyan form, a form that previously required Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta to contain.
Gohan and Broly possess a significantly higher natural potential and strength compared to Goku and Vegeta, making them the most likely candidates to finally defeat Frieza. The recent events in the Dragon Ball Super manga, specifically the Super Hero Saga, have changed things so much that it’s now a real possibility Goku and Vegeta could fail. Furthermore, Goku and Vegeta’s character development feels largely complete, while there’s still a lot of unexplored potential with Gohan and Broly.
