As a seasoned researcher with a background in artificial intelligence and robotics, I find the recent developments in this field to be nothing short of exhilarating. Over the last century, technology has advanced at an unprecedented rate, particularly in the realm of AI. Until recently, most people had limited exposure to AI chatbots or robots, but with the advent of projects like Skild AI and its impressive $300M investment from industry titans like Jeff Bezos and Softbank, it’s clear that we are on the precipice of a new era.
Over the past century, technological progress has significantly outpaced the previous millennia. A striking illustration of this trend can be found in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Just a year ago, many people were unfamiliar with AI chatbots or efforts to create AI robots. Yet, since the debut of Chatgpt, there has been a deluge of innovative projects in this field. Skild AI is developing one such project and has recently secured a substantial $300M investment from prominent venture capitalists like Jeff Bezos and Softbank.
Using this new development, Skild AI joins the ranks of OpenAI, Anthropic AI, and xAI in the field of advanced artificial intelligence research.
Skild AI is Building General Purpose, Robot Brain
Skild AI is a newly established AI company founded in May 2023, joining the ranks of competitors against OpenAI. The company is helmed by former professors from Carnegie Mellon University: Abhinav Gupta and Deepak Pathak. Currently, Skild AI is developing a Robot Brain, an AI model designed for use in any robot. This innovative technology enables robots to handle intricate tasks across industries and various locations, reducing the need for costly custom software. The universal nature of the Robot Brain will streamline the process by eliminating the requirement for unique software solutions.
According to Skild AI‘s press release, these machines can function as “quadrupeds overcoming challenging physical environments” or “vision-equipped humans handling intricate object manipulation for advanced household and industrial duties.”
The firm is making efforts to construct a type of artificial intelligence, known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which aims to mimic human-like intellect. However, it’s essential to note that AGI does not yet have a definitive meaning, but it essentially refers to advanced AI systems similar to what we currently understand as AI.
What Will Robot Brain Work?
The Robot Brain, as suggested by its title, serves as the primary Artificial Intelligence system within the robot framework. Its functionality enables the robot to execute rudimentary tasks according to its programming. This software undergoes training using authentic data from various sources like texts, images, and videos, similar to how AI chatbots are developed. However, Robot Brain stands out with its enhanced capabilities as it is designed for both remote-controlled tasks and on-demand random operations. Consequently, the robot could potentially display more human-like physical movements.
In a recent press release, Abhinav Gupta, the founder, explained it,
Using versatile robots capable of executing various tasks safely in all environments and adopting different forms, we can broaden robot functionality, make them more affordable for mass use, and alleviate the strain on the heavily labor-demanded workforce.
Skild AI‘s Robot brain is designed to carry out untrained, random tasks akin to how living beings like humans naturally move and perform tasks. The goal is to develop a robot that deviates significantly from traditional factory-working machines. While these machines excel in speed and efficiency, they lack the flexibility we aim to incorporate into our robot.
Based on my extensive background in artificial intelligence and venture capital, I can confidently say that Skild AI‘s latest idea is a game-changer. With my years of experience in this field, I’ve witnessed numerous innovations, but none quite like this. The fact that they have secured an impressive $300 Million in funding with their vision is a testament to their expertise and potential.
