As a dedicated fan of Jujutsu Kaisen who has been following this manga since its inception, I must confess that the handling of Nobara’s character left me utterly disheartened. Gege’s treatment of female characters in this series is not just below par but seems to be a regrettable step backward for Shonen manga as a whole.
This article contains spoilers from JJK 265.
In the present, the final story arc of “Jujutsu Kaisen” is unfolding, with tension running high among viewers. The captivating battles have won hearts, yet anticipation also simmers as fans long for satisfying resolutions for their cherished characters. These characters have been a significant part of viewers’ lives over the past few years, making it essential for them to see these beloved figures receive fitting conclusions. Among these characters, Nobara is particularly admired by fans who hope she will thrive in the “Jujutsu Kaisen” universe.
Initially, Nobara played a crucial role in the story, forming the core trio with Yuji and Megumi. However, following the events in Shibuya, Nobara’s character suffered significant damage, leaving readers uncertain about her outcome. Recently, the author seems to have provided clarification on her fate.
Nobara’s Death In Jujutsu Kaisen Came During The Shibuya Arc
Nobara Was Officially Taken Down By Mahito
In the anime “Jujutsu Kaisen,” Nobara initially held a significant role in the story, particularly during the initial arcs. However, as the series progressed, her significance diminished. During the Shibuya Incident Arc, fans hoped for more involvement from Nobara, but she was mostly absent, and when she did appear, her character was abruptly terminated. This sudden demise surprised fans greatly because Nobara was one of the main female leads in the story, and her early departure was unexpectedly dramatic. It seems that her death may have been primarily for shock value and lacked substantial impact on the narrative. Nobara met a gruesome end during the battle with Mahito. In a twist, Mahito, who considered both Yuji and Nobara as formidable foes, split himself into two and assaulted them simultaneously. Given that Nobara could inflict damage to souls like Yuji, Mahito swiftly changed positions and struck Nobara with a devastating Idle Transfiguration blow to her face.
What happened to Kugisaki? Oh…I get it!! – Yuji
In essence, a significant portion of Nobara took a heavy toll, suggesting damage not only to her physical appearance but potentially her mental state as well. The audience witnessed a gruesome scene depicting Nobara on the brink of death, yet there was never any definitive confirmation about her demise. Following Mahito’s strike, the narrative hinted that Nobara had extremely slim chances of surviving. However, it was implied that some intervention could have possibly saved her life. After Shibuya, fans noticed Yuji inquiring about Nobara to Megumi, but he remained silent on the matter.
In many people’s minds, his pretense of silence served as an affirmation. However, during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, it was explicitly revealed that Yuji wasn’t involved in most plans due to concerns about Sukuna discovering them through him. For example, Todo’s comeback to the battlefield was hidden from him for two reasons: one, to avoid tipping off Sukuna, and two, because it added an unexpected factor later on. Likewise, fans wished that Nobara’s return would be kept under wraps, hoping that she would surprise everyone by revealing her newly developed skills in the final confrontation against the King of Curses.
How Nobara’s Fate Hung In Balance In The Story
Nobara’s Death Was Never Truly Confirmed In JJK
In a more casual, conversational tone:
In the narrative, the primary character, Nobara, received the most disadvantageous set of circumstances and met an untimely demise early on. Other female characters had occasional significant scenes, yet none of them fully explored or fleshed out their individual personalities throughout the story.
It’s not a zero percent chance that she’ll survive, but please don’t get your hopes up!! – Nitta
Despite many fans developing an affinity towards the main character, often seen in narratives, characters can garner supporters regardless of their quality. However, the author appeared to have little interest in Nobara, as she was scarcely featured and her death did not catalyze substantial plot developments beyond Yuji’s anger against Mahito. Essentially, Nobara’s demise seemed more intended for shock effect rather than narrative progression, which is disheartening from any perspective fans might take on it.
As a die-hard fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I had been eagerly waiting for my favorite character’s grand comeback, much like we all hoped. Yet, it seems that my hopes have been dashed as the epic showdown between Sukuna and Yuji has officially kicked off, implying she might not make an appearance anymore.
Gege Seemingly Confirms Nobara’s Fate
Gege Seemed To Imply Nobara’s Fate Is Sealed In JJK 265
In chapter 265 of JJK, readers saw a reflection of Nobara again, but this time it was through Yuji’s memories instead of her physically appearing in the story. Essentially, Yuji reminisced about his past, focusing on everyone he’d lost throughout the years, which played a significant role in shaping him into who he is now. The author depicted each person that Yuji had lost, starting with his grandfather, who passed away early in the series, and then moving on to Junpei, Nanami, Gojo, Choso, and Nobara as well. By drawing Nobara alongside other deceased characters from the series, it strongly implies that she is, in fact, no longer alive.
It’s possible that the character’s apparent death, as depicted by Yuji, is only his assumption. However, considering the author’s intention to conclude this fight and recent scenes showcasing characters who Yuji has lost throughout the series, it seems very unlikely that she will reappear in the story.
As a longtime reader of manga and anime, I can’t help but feel disappointed by the recent turn of events regarding Nobara in Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK). Coming from someone who appreciates well-crafted characters with depth and nuance, it seems that the author has missed a golden opportunity to create a truly memorable character arc for her.
