Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 21 Review: Yuji And Mahito Meet Once Again

Chapter 21 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo was a huge hit with fans, largely because it featured Yuji Itadori, the main character from the original series. Readers were eager to see the fight between Tsurugi and Maru finally end, and to watch Dabura Karaba grow even stronger while battling Mahoraga. While the chapter was packed with exciting moments, many fans believe it ultimately provided a satisfying resolution to the original Jujutsu Kaisen story.

I’ve been following the story closely, and Yuji Itadori is still central to everything, now that he’s encountered Maru. It looks like he’s cooking up a really interesting plan. Meanwhile, that huge battle between Maru and Tsurugi seems to be over. What’s really grabbing my attention, though, is Dabura. This character is changing so quickly, and I’m eager to see where the author, Gege Akutami, takes their storyline.

The latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, Chapter 21, continued directly from where the last one ended. We saw Maru and Tsurugi battling at an incredibly high level, and it seemed like Rika had absorbed all of Tsurugi’s Cursed Energy, triggering his Heavenly Restriction. That turned out to be correct! This chapter showed Tsurugi easily overpowering Maru, but in a surprising turn of events, he deliberately dropped his Split Soul Katana, letting Maru cut him across the chest. It was a bizarre move, and ultimately led to Tsurugi losing the fight.

Maru has critically wounded Tsurugi, leaving the situation unresolved. Tsurugi, however, intentionally lost the fight, refusing to win in a way that would humiliate Maru. While the duel itself was fair, Tsurugi believes it’s wrong for Maru to forfeit his claim to a nation based solely on the outcome of a fight. Tsurugi is torn – he doesn’t want the fate of an entire people to rest on a duel, and he fears for Yuka’s life. At only seventeen, he’s been placed in an impossible situation, one that would overwhelm even the most seasoned individuals. This encounter was a deeply complex moment for both Tsurugi and Maru, who now find themselves once again central to the events unfolding in Jujutsu Kaisen.

It was wild – right as Maru finished his fight with Tsurugi, Yuji Itadori suddenly appeared! This threw Maru into this crazy in-between place, like a limbo between life and death, and it turns out Mahito is hanging out there. We’ve actually seen glimpses of this place before in Jujutsu Kaisen, first when Kenjaku was around, and then when Sukuna… well, when Sukuna died. That’s where Sukuna actually met Mahito and told him he’d changed. Now, Yuji’s there too, and apparently, he’s got a plan, at least according to Maru!

Yuji was drawn into Maru’s power because his ability recognized him as someone deserving. Maru intends for Yuji to witness a connection between humans and the Simurians. Maru believes he can eliminate cursed spirits using his technique, but it requires a process called Idle Transfiguration, which they need to get from Mahito. This could be the reason Mahito was reintroduced to the story. As fans will recall, eliminating cursed spirits was a key focus of Jujutsu Kaisen, though the storyline never received a satisfying resolution. The original story only hinted at possible solutions:

For every non-sorcerer to be killed
For everyone to either be taught how to optimize their cursed energy or for cursed energy to simply not exist anymore

Maru seems to be developing a skill similar to Yuta Okkotsu’s, where he stores a large amount of cursed energy to power his abilities. The story is building towards Maru being able to completely eliminate cursed spirits, and that’s what’s likely to happen next.

Dabura Unlocks His Domain Expansion

Chapter 21 of the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga revealed Dabura’s powerful Domain Expansion much sooner than fans anticipated, demonstrating his surprisingly fast progress.

Previously, Dabura developed a new ability by manipulating his light and creating darkness. Now, after observing his spaceship, he’s learned how to create barriers and has enhanced his technique within one, resulting in a powerful Domain Expansion called “Reverse Crossing.” Its full capabilities are currently a mystery. Meanwhile, Mahoraga is demonstrating an unprecedented ability to adapt to Dabura’s cursed technique – and even his very existence – without needing to be directly affected by it.

Dabura is probably going to land a powerful, unavoidable attack on the Divine General, likely defeating him instantly and ending the fight. Around this time, Yuji Itadori and Maru need to act to finally eliminate Cursed Spirits for good. However, even if Dabura is defeated, he might still look for another opponent. He’s just discovered how much he enjoys fighting, and could become the next big villain. This would mean another battle between Yuji Itadori and Dabura.

Watching Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, it’s clear things are really starting to ramp up, but we’re nearing the end. Originally, the author, Gege, envisioned a three-volume story, which would mean only about four or five chapters remain. However, there’s a chance it could go on a bit longer – maybe even get another volume or a few extra chapters. Honestly, fans are hoping it does! This story has been incredible from beginning to end, and it’s really showcased just how talented Gege is as a writer.
