Killing Floor 3: The Ultimate Zombie Slaughter Experience Awaits!

Occasionally, a game simply gives players a weapon, such as a gun to fight off zombies, and this timeless gaming experience is why titles like “Killing Floor” have become iconic. For over two decades, “Killing Floor” (and its Zeds) has been closely associated with this style of gameplay. Now, twenty years after it first appeared as a mod for “Unreal Tournament 2004”, the third installment is gearing up to bring its fast-paced, chaotic action into the present day. “Killing Floor 3” officially launches on March 25, and we at Game Recently had the opportunity to spend some time battling Zeds in it.

70 years after the events of “Killing Floor 2”, we find ourselves in a new timeline for “Killing Floor 3”. The narrative centers around a resistance group called Nightfall, who are battling against the corporate giant Horzine and its horde of Zeds. However, what truly defines the “Killing Floor” series is its focus on killing Zeds, and this latest installment ramps that up significantly.

Improvements to the franchise’s overall quality-of-life and gameplay mechanics make it incredibly challenging to return to the gameplay of “Killing Floor 2”.

Out on The Killing Floor

In Killing Floor Mode, players progress sequentially against hordes of Zeds, enhancing their equipment at a Trader during breaks, with the goal of getting strong enough to defeat the final boss. The toughness of Killing Floor 3 is part of its charm, as we found “normal” mode quite easy, but increasing the difficulty level made it significantly more demanding. In fact, we barely managed to reach Wave 3 before being defeated. According to Tripwire Interactive, the game thrives when players are on the edge of survival. Consequently, players should focus on upgrading their characters and customizing their weapons to boost their chances of success as they attempt to conquer all maps and difficulty levels in Killing Floor 3.

As I journey through the gritty world of Killing Floor 3, the chase is never-ending: die, upgrade my character, improve, win, crank up the challenge, die again… and so on. Fortunately, each character can be leveled up to a max of 30, but that doesn’t mean the game gets any easier. The difficulty in Killing Floor 3 adapts to your progress, so even though “normal” might seem easy at first, it will still pose a significant challenge for players at that level. Each character comes equipped with a unique gadget that can be a game-changer – the Engineer’s twin sonic cannons are perfect for clearing enemy waves and controlling bosses, while Foster’s drone is an excellent tool for recovery or offense. Truth be told, gadgets are essential in Killing Floor 3; you won’t survive without them. However, that doesn’t mean the game skimps on weapon variety – there’s a plethora of weapons to choose from, and multiple mods to customize each one into your very own Zed-slaying machine.

As players customize and fine-tune their firearms, they’ll simultaneously boost their rank as well. This rise in rank not only improves a player’s readiness for combat but also increases their operational funds, used for purchasing weapons and modifications at the start of each level. Essentially, the more time a player spends gaming, the better equipped they become. However, players should be cautious when modifying their weapons due to the associated costs, introducing an engaging management aspect into the gameplay of Killing Floor 3.

Quality of Life Improvements Over KF2

Among the numerous enjoyable aspects of Killing Floor 3, three significant elements captured our attention during our preview: Zed Time, the movement system, and the MEAT system. Previous games had issues with Zed Time, where it was more of a hindrance than an advantage when triggered. Players could find their gameplay interrupted without any real benefit if they were caught at the wrong moment. However, in Killing Floor 3, this isn’t the case anymore. When Zeds slow down, players can still navigate through swarms of them within a protective zone. In Killing Floor 3, when Zed Time activates, it serves as a universal reward that also allows players to appreciate finer details, like improvements in the MEAT system.

In the thrilling game “Killing Floor 3”, the MEAT system experiences a smart upgrade, enhancing its already impressive performance. This refined MEAT system not only maintains the realistic depiction of blood and gore across levels, but also causes Zeds to respond appropriately to the damage inflicted upon them. For instance, if a player burns a Zed, the creature will react, move, and adjust its behavior accordingly, significantly boosting the game’s immersive quality. Despite the fact that individual waves can be overpowering, making it challenging to fully appreciate this feature at all times, it becomes particularly noticeable during “Zed Time”. In other words, players are encouraged to pause and take in the gruesome beauty of the undead environment. However, on higher waves and difficulties within Killing Floor 3, players will be running for cover and battling for survival!

The game truly excels in creating intense moments: those when players seem to be at the brink of mortality, a characteristic that has always been part of the franchise. However, there have been instances in earlier versions where the conflict between gameplay and mechanics led to unnecessary deaths. In the case of Killing Floor 2, the movement used to feel restrictive compared to the challenges presented, but this issue no longer persists. Features like vaulting significantly improve the experience, while its flexible movement system allows players to dodge death more effectively. Of course, mastery and surviving against the horde is still required, but navigating through the game now feels much more natural compared to previous versions.

In essence, Killing Floor 3 showcases significant advancements that justify its sequel title, emphasizing the value of continuous development in a series. Although it might not be an entirely novel gaming experience, it represents a substantial upgrade compared to the previous two co-op zombie games. After playing Killing Floor 3 for only a few hours, revisiting Killing Floor 2 becomes a bit challenging due to these noticeable improvements.
