Kraken Exchange Under Fire As Some Mt Gox Creditors Complain

As a researcher with extensive experience in the crypto industry, I have closely followed the ongoing saga of Kraken and its handling of Mt Gox creditor payments. The frustration expressed by some creditors who have yet to receive their Bitcoin (BTC) repayments is palpable, and their concerns are valid.

A group of Mt Gox creditors are voicing their displeasure towards Kraken, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange, due to unpaid Bitcoin (BTC) repayments. These creditors argue that they have yet to receive the funds they were promised, despite being assured that distributions were underway. This predicament has ignited strong feelings among those affected, leading many to express their concerns and demand clarification on the insolvency subreddit.

Kraken Fails To Deliver Bitcoin Payments

As a crypto investor, I’ve come across a concerning issue that some of us in the community are facing. We’ve approved linked Kraken accounts and have been recognized as creditors in the ongoing Mt Gox case. However, despite our efforts to follow up with both Kraken and the Mt Gox trustee, we haven’t received our BTC payments yet. It’s disheartening to see that our communication has yielded no results so far.

I’ve communicated with Kraken support, yet they’ve merely suggested that I reach out to the trustee. However, the trustee’s responses have been standard and unspecific, not offering personalized guidance.

Furthermore, the user expressed dissatisfaction with Kraken’s passive approach to communication and assistance. Additionally, they proposed that Kraken make use of their connection to Mt Gox to acquire and share updates on the delays with their users. The user pointed out:

Based on my perspective, Kraken has the ability to identify which of its accounts are connected to Mt. Gox and which ones have received or not received payments. Therefore, they could utilize their direct line of communication with Mt. Gox to acquire information regarding why these particular accounts have yet to be compensated.

Multiple users on the subreddit have expressed the same concern, reporting issues with Kraken involving lack of funds, no received emails about Bitcoin, and being directed to contact trustees. The trustees, in turn, reply that the status is marked as ‘Incomplete’, indicating that the repayment is being processed for transfer. Unfortunately, they are unable to offer personalized guidance.

As an analyst, I’ve noticed a concern raised by a user regarding the absence of updates from Kraken about the Mt. Gox repayment via emails. They mentioned, “I haven’t received any emails from Kraken and was given a brush-off about the specialized team contacting which hasn’t happened in the last 7 days.” The user went on to say that they have already received their cash balance, but not their BTC.

Despite the complaints raised, it has been reported that numerous creditors have already received their payments from Mt Gox. For instance, on July 23rd, discussions on Reddit indicated that most creditors connected to Kraken had confirmed receiving their funds. However, this does not diminish the fact that there are still unresolved cases causing major concern during the distribution process.

Lack Of Communication

The frustration deepens as Kraken and the Mt Gox trustee fail to provide clear and comprehensive updates. The original post mentions having received two significant emails. One was from Kraken on February 15, 2024, with the title “Confirmation and Next Steps – Your Account is Active [Preparing for Mt. Gox Distribution]”. The other email, sent by Mt Gox on March 8, 2024, confirmed ownership of the account.

Users encountered confusion and uncertainty in July when they didn’t receive a confirmatory email from Kraken regarding the receipt of creditor funds. Additionally, some users have yet to be paid the initial installments of their Mt Gox compensation.

Mt. Gox BTC Transfers

Currently, Bitcoin’s market behavior has been influenced by events related to Mt Gox. On July 23rd, Arkham Intelligence disclosed that a wallet with the Mt Gox tag transferred approximately 42,587.49 BTC, equivalent to around $2.8 billion, to an anonymous wallet. Furthermore, there was another significant transaction on this day, moving 37.477K BTC or roughly $2.47 billion, to a new and unknown Bitcoin address.

Large-scale Bitcoin transfers introduce an additional level of intricacy to the existing distribution procedure. These transfers hint at imminent repayments for the remaining creditors. Notably, Bitstamp received approximately 2,238 BTC, equivalent to over $147 million, on Monday, and no objections have been raised regarding the payout. Consequently, Kraken could adopt a comparable approach to tackle the challenges at hand.
