The dogwifhat (WIF) community, once brimming with hope, now finds itself nursing a bruised ego. The grand vision of a “Sphere WIF hat” lighting up the Las Vegas skyline has been unceremoniously dashed. The fundraiser team, in a move that reeks of defeat, has announced the start of refunds for contributors. This comes on the heels of the Sphere team’s February declaration, which flatly denied any deal to showcase the memecoin sensation on the world’s largest LED screen. 🎭
On Monday, a glum update was shared by a campaign organizer, known on X as “GamesMaster.wif.” The post revealed that contributions are now being refunded after a year of tireless efforts to conquer the Las Vegas strip. The organizer claimed that contracts had been signed with The Sphere through a fashion partner, and everything was “set to put the hat on the Sphere in Q1 with our classic guerrilla marketing style.” But alas, the dream was too big, too bold, and ultimately, too doomed. 🎩💥
Earlier this year, the announcement of the project “had unintended consequences,” which apparently spooked their partner into backing out. On January 28, the dogwifhat official X account teased the project with an image of their mascot in Las Vegas, the Sphere perched atop its head like a whimsical hat. The post included an old Nokia phone with “01.2025” on its screen, hinting at a Q1 launch. A second post promised to share dates soon, sending WIF into a 16% rally. But the Las Vegas Sphere’s team quickly distanced itself from the project, calling it “fraudulent.” 🚨
GamesMaster explained that the Sphere’s denial “spooked” their partner, leading to the collapse of the deal. The team then tried to collaborate with an artist or DJ playing at the Sphere to include Dogwifhat in their visuals, but this too fell through. “That effort led to a connection with an agency close to one of the artists, who claimed to have a strong relationship with the Sphere’s CEO. They pitched the idea as a pure art installation—just the pink knitted hat fully wrapping the Sphere,” the post read. But as the deadline loomed, communication with the agency became “increasingly unreliable,” forcing the team to abandon the project. 🎨❌
In 2024, WIF had its moment in the sun, becoming one of the memecoin sensations of the cycle. It reached an all-time high of $4.88 on March 31, 2024, and led the memecoin narrative during Q2. The December pump brought back some of its early glory. Amid this meteoric rise, the WIF community rallied behind the fundraising campaign to display the memecoin on the Las Vegas Sphere. The campaign aimed to raise $650,000, a goal that was quickly surpassed, with $700,000 raised. But as months passed without progress, frustration grew. Many called the project a scam and demanded refunds. 🐕💸
On Monday’s X post, the organizer stated, “Even a small amount of risk wasn’t acceptable when handling funds raised by the community.” Refunds began on April 1, with investors who sent contributions through a Centralized Exchange (CEX) needing to submit proof manually. “The hat stays on,” the post concluded, a bittersweet nod to a dream that never was. 🎩💔
