The new LEGO Batman game, Legacy of the Dark Knight, is receiving almost universal praise. People are loving its exploration, how it looks, and the classic LEGO fun it offers, and I’d have to agree – it’s a really great game.
The new LEGO Batman game, Legacy of the Dark Knight, clearly draws a lot of inspiration from the Batman: Arkham series, particularly in its combat system – it feels very similar and almost like a deliberate nod to those games. While it’s fun to experience Batman in LEGO form, the constant reminders of the Arkham series are a bit odd. As much as I’m enjoying this new game, it actually makes me want another Batman Arkham title even more, which is disappointing because it seems unlikely to happen.
Spoilers ahead for the Batman: Arkham series, especially Batman: Arkham Knight.
Where Is the Next Batman Game from Rocksteady, Creators of the Arkham Series?
When Arkham Knight came out in 2015, reactions were mixed. While critics generally loved it, players had some complaints about the story and how the open world was designed, especially the way the Batmobile was used. However, after more than ten years, people seem to be looking back on the game more favorably. Perhaps because we haven’t had a major Batman game since then, I believe Arkham Knight remains the ultimate Batman gaming experience, flaws and all.

So, after Arkham Knight, Rocksteady was planning another Batman game – they called it Project Sabbath. Apparently, it would’ve featured Damian Wayne as Batman, set in a future Gotham that really reminded me of Batman Beyond. Remember how Batman faked his death at the end of Arkham Knight with the Knightfall Protocol? I always wondered how that would tie into the next game, and with Damian taking over as Batman, it would’ve opened up a ton of cool story possibilities. It’s a shame it never happened, but imagining a future Gotham with Damian Wayne as the Dark Knight is pretty awesome!
Many fans of the Batman Arkham series were disappointed when Project Sabbath was cancelled around 2017. Rocksteady Studios shifted its focus to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League instead, a game that unfortunately didn’t perform well. Though considered part of the Arkham universe, it’s unlikely we’ll see any more Suicide Squad games. This leaves the future of the main Arkham series uncertain – it could be a good or bad thing for the franchise.
The Failure of Suicide Squad: KTJL Could Be Arkham’s Boon or Bane
In Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Batman appears to be killed, but it’s later revealed that it was just a clone created by Brainiac. The real Bruce Wayne and the rest of the Justice League are still alive. Essentially, what happens to Batman in Kill the Justice League isn’t important to the overall story.
Okay, so Gotham Knights plays a lot more like the Arkham games than Knight to Justice League does, but even though it feels similar, it’s officially not part of the Arkham story universe. It’s a bit weird, honestly, but that’s where things stand.

Similar to how Warner Bros. handled the first Suicide Squad movie, they can essentially move past Kill the Justice League and start a new Batman Arkham game as if it never existed – avoiding reminders of a game many would prefer to forget. Returning to the classic Batman Arkham style could also help Rocksteady regain the positive reputation they lost with Suicide Squad. However, there’s a possibility Rocksteady might not get another opportunity to prove themselves after such a disappointing launch, which would be unfortunate.
