As an analyst with a background in technology and finance, I find Linus Torvalds’ perspective on cryptocurrencies intriguing. His experience as the creator of Linux and Git, as well as his involvement in the open-source community, makes him a respected figure in the tech world.
As a crypto enthusiast, I’ve come across Linus Torvalds’ recent statement in a forum that he’s skeptical about cryptocurrencies. Despite being a renowned software engineer who gave us Linux, his perspective on digital currencies is not aligned with mine.
As a seasoned crypto investor, I’ve grown skeptical of this new digital asset class. In my opinion, it has become an alluring playground for swindlers and scams. The nature of cryptocurrencies bears striking resemblance to Ponzi schemes, where the primary objective is to lure in the next unsuspecting investor, who will ultimately bear the losses.
“Nor do I believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, or the Easter bunny,” he quipped.
A Satoshi candidate?
Notable is the fact that the pioneer of open-source development and the inventor of Git, who was at one point speculated to be the mysterious figure behind Bitcoin’s creation as Satoshi Nakamoto, holds a significant history in this field.
As a researcher studying the origins of groundbreaking technologies, I’ve come across Torvalds, an extraordinary individual who brought Linux to life at just 21 years old. His technical prowess and innovative mindset make him a strong contender for having conceived Bitcoin had he chosen that path.
In early 2022, speculation swirled around after Torvalds reportedly modified a Linux Kernel label to read “I am Satoshi” instead of its original name.
Torvalds clarified that the issue was caused by someone playing a prank, exploiting GitHub’s workflow to create a false impression that their git object had been incorporated into my repository.
He further explained that the rumors were merely unfounded, emphasizing that he did not possess a substantial Bitcoin wealth.
No technological singularity
In his publication, Torvalds expressed skepticism towards the concept of technological singularity, labeling it as a captivating yet implausible tale akin to children’s bedtime stories. With a lighthearted tone, he added, “It’s not just a story for children at bedtime, but also an intriguing topic that generates plenty of clicks online.”
Despite the renowned computer scientist acknowledging its intrigue as a science fiction idea, the notion of continuous exponential growth remains unfathomable to him. Torvalds further expressed, “We’re definitely approaching our limits.”
