In Lushfoil Photography Sim, players traverse realistic nature-based environments, snapping pictures using a DSLR camera in their journey. The sole creator, Matt Newell, sparked interest with individual maps previously, eventually catching the eye of Annapurna Interactive who decided to publish the game. Following its launch on April 15, Lushfoil Photography Sim has been showered with acclaim by both players and critics, earning kudos for its stunningly realistic graphics and calming gameplay experience.
Every intriguing destination in the global map of Lushfoil Photography Sim offers a wealth of hidden gems and unique navigation techniques, transforming it from a mere walking simulator into an enriched experience with an impressive photo mode. In a recent interview, Game Rant delved into exploration aspects, solo development benefits, and other fascinating topics with the game’s creator Matt Newell. For your convenience, the conversation has been streamlined for clarity and conciseness.
Exploring The World Of Lushfoil
A. What specifically captivated you about the diverse settings in Lushfoil Photography Sim, such as the challenging path in Iceland and the deserted Chinese village?
In 2019-2020, I journeyed far and wide, and some breathtaking locales I encountered left an indelible mark on me. This inspiration sparked a creative pursuit to bring these places to life digitally. While crafting my game, I’d frequently use my travel photos as a guide, painting them into reality within the Unreal Engine. I strived for visual diversity in my designs, ensuring no environment would feel repetitive or monotonous compared to its real-world counterpart.
Question: How closely do the game’s representations of each location resemble reality? Can gamers actually travel to these places and match the game maps with the actual ones they see in real life?
Certainly! I highly recommend that you visit these places in reality, and I believe your experience will be even more enriching if you’ve played the game prior. While there are some adjustments made for the game version, such as shortened paths, I’ve aimed to preserve as much authenticity as possible.
As a gamer, I often find myself wondering about the perks of venturing through these game maps not just by foot, but also by boats, bikes, and drones. Is there anything extra I get for exploring in these unique ways, apart from the sheer joy it brings? And have I missed out on any other creative methods to traverse these maps?
The main goal here is to provide avid photographers with additional methods to explore their creative side in photography, all while having an enjoyable means of transportation. Moreover, these items come with game elements, like utilizing a boat to access unreachable shores or employing a drone to accomplish photo tasks that would otherwise be impossible. I’d only consider other travel options if they were uniquely connected to the specific environments in a fulfilling manner.
The Positives Of Being A Solo Developer

A. With you as a solo developer, it’s likely that there has been a significant amount of effort poured in over the past few years. However, do you believe there are any benefits to working alone as well?
One benefit of solo work is maintaining a unified vision more easily. Each aspect of the game can be meticulously crafted with a single intent in mind. I aim for players to grasp this coherence during their play experience.
Q. Which of the maps is your favorite and why?
The final piece I worked on was Shengshan Island. This map, which represents the culmination of my efforts as an environment artist, showcases my skills at their zenith. With its otherworldly ambiance, Shengshan Island truly immerses you, and when coupled with a fitting level-specific soundtrack, the whole experience is significantly enhanced.
Inquiry: The maps show a balance between nature and human presence. Can you suggest any other places you’d like to discover next, perhaps one that is more urban, like a city? Are cities something that appeals to your curiosity?
A: I thrive in natural settings and dense forests – it’s where I feel most at home. Venturing into urban environments could be a tough hurdle, as it seems somewhat incongruous with Lushfoil’s theme and my solitary exploration style. Nevertheless, I’m keeping an open mind about future possibilities.
Using The Cameras

A. When using a DSLR camera in practical situations, it demands quite a few accurate button pushes. Have you encountered any difficulties when assigning camera functions to keyboard keys or game controllers instead?”
Answer: It was suggested that a camera could function as a gaming controller, an intriguing concept, but it appears it can’t be done at the moment.
Question: What inspired you to incorporate concealed mysteries and bonus items like older cameras into your maps, and in what ways do these elements differ from the usual cameras?
Primarily for a touch of nostalgia, I found immense pleasure in purchasing camera equipment under the guise of “research,” striving to mimic the effects from vintage cameras. These items serve as a motivator for exploration and potentially evoke a similar sense of nostalgia in the player as well.
Could it be possible that this game offers both educational and therapeutic benefits? Might it serve as a teaching tool for subjects like photography, nature appreciation, and so forth?
Absolutely, on both counts! I’ve provided plenty of educational resources for those new to camera use, giving them a solid foundation. Additionally, the music has been carefully selected to promote tranquility, aiming to offer players a relaxing gaming experience.
Q. Is there a dedicated place that you would recommend for sharing snaps with other players?
Social media is where I spend most of my time – scrolling through Twitter, Bluesky, and Instagram. I particularly enjoy viewing the photographs that others have captured. To be honest, many of these photos are superior to what I could manage myself.
