Macross Celebrates 45th Anniversary with Colossal SDF-1 Figure

The classic anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross is celebrating its 45th anniversary with an impressive new collectible: a large, transforming diecast toy of the iconic SDF-1. While the series might not be widely known by name, many Western fans remember it as Robotech, which used the first season of the original 1982 Macross anime (though with significant edits) for its initial run. The SDF-1 is a central symbol of the franchise, and this detailed toy will soon be available – initially in one specific region.

The Macross franchise began in 1982 with a groundbreaking anime series, quickly expanding into a vast universe of spin-offs, movies, comics, and video games. A cornerstone of the mecha genre, Macross helped popularize the idea of transforming robots. Interestingly, Shoji Kawamori, the creator of Macross, later became a key character designer for Transformers.

Later this year, Bandai Spirits will release a highly detailed, transforming diecast figure of the SDF-1 from the classic 1982 anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross. The impressive figure, which includes LED lights, showcases the mecha’s iconic features, like the city contained within its structure and its powerful weaponry. Designed with input from Kazutaka Miyatake, a key mechanical designer for the Macross series, the figure stands 65 cm (over 2 feet) tall and will cost around $620. Preorders begin June 1, but unfortunately, this collectible will only be available for purchase in Japan.

The original Macross series from 1982 is still loved by fans, and Macross 7, which came out in 1994, became part of the wave of popular space adventure shows of the 90s, alongside titles like Turn A Gundam, Crest of the Stars, and Infinite Ryvius. It’s only recently gained a following in the US, as it wasn’t officially released here until July 2022. Interestingly, Macross 7 is most famous for its music – the fictional band Fire Bomber has released over a dozen albums over the years. The franchise continued with Macross Frontier in 2007 and Macross Delta in 2016, and a new anime series is currently in development.

The lasting impact of Macross comes from both its transforming robots and its focus on relatable characters. Unlike many other shows about giant robots, which centered on pilots and battles, Macross puts everyday people at the heart of the story, exploring how war affects their lives. A unique aspect of Macross is the success of its fictional idol singers – starting with Lynn Minmay in the original 1982 series – who have gone on to release popular music in the real world, a tradition that continues with each new Macross installment.

You can now stream Robotech on Crunchyroll. Hulu and Disney+ have added several original Macross series, including Macross Plus, Macross Delta, Maccross 7, and Macross Frontier. For years, a legal dispute between BIG WEST and Harmony Gold made it difficult to watch Macross in the US, but that was resolved in 2025, giving fans access to this classic mecha series.
