Magic: The Gathering Addresses One Ring Tracing Controversy

Wizards of the Coast, the makers of Magic: The Gathering, has addressed the criticism regarding the new artwork for The One Ring card from the upcoming Hobbit set. They’ve confirmed that the final image was created by painting over an existing piece of art.

The upcoming collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and The Hobbit is one of the most exciting releases planned for 2026. Recently, Magic: The Gathering previewed several new cards from the set, featuring popular characters like Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and Smaug. The expansion will also include reprints of existing cards, such as Arcane Signet, Wood Elves, and the famous One Ring. However, the decision to reprint The One Ring is now causing some disagreement within the Magic: The Gathering community.

Magic: The Gathering’s New One Ring Card Was Traced

Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Magic: The Gathering, and artist Dan Frazier recently addressed concerns about the artwork for a special version of The One Ring card. Frazier confirmed he painted over artwork originally created by Marta Nael when creating the new alternate art for The Hobbit. Wizards of the Coast announced that both artists will be credited on the final released card, and Nael will also receive financial compensation. Frazier has personally apologized to Nael for the mistake.

The One Ring card has generated a lot of discussion, and it’s one of the most popular cards from the Magic: The Gathering collaboration with The Hobbit. Originally released as a rare card in The Lord of the Rings set, it has since been printed with different artwork in special bundles and as a unique Secret Lair version. A special, one-of-a-kind Elvish version of the card even sold for over $2 million to Post Malone in 2023. This reprinted version of The One Ring will only be available in Collector’s Booster packs for The Hobbit set.

The upcoming Magic: The Gathering set inspired by The Hobbit will feature more than just The One Ring card. The expansion will showcase beautiful card versions inspired by the original book covers, including characters like Thorin and scenes with The Arkenstone. A special, limited-edition version of the Smaug card – with a shiny gold finish – will be extremely rare, with only 500 copies available. Additionally, five cards in the set will be printed in the Dwarven language, with Arcane Signet being the first revealed.
