I’m totally hooked on Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series! It’s been blowing up lately, and I can see why. The books are super fast-paced and action-packed – it follows Carl and his sassy, talking cat, Princess Donut, as they fight their way through an eighteen-floor dungeon to save the world from aliens. What I really love is how immersive the world is, the characters are fantastic, and it feels like you’re actually playing a game while you read. May 12th is going to be a huge day for fans, I can feel it!
Fans of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series have a new book to look forward to on May 12th! The next installment, featuring Carl, Donut, and their friends, will be released that day.
A Parade Of Horribles Debuts May 12
The release date for the eighth book in the LitRPG series, A Parade of Horribles, has been set for May 12, 2026. Author Matt Dinniman has consistently released new content, with seven books and an ongoing novella since the series began. It’s best to read the Dungeon Crawler Carl books in the order they were published, as the story follows a continuous timeline with Carl exploring one or two floors of the World Dungeon in each book.
Carl Will Experience The Racing Game Genre
The eighth book, called A Parade of Horribles, will continue Carl’s journey through the dungeon, specifically floors ten and eleven of the eighteen total floors. Each floor has a different theme, often based on video games. For example, the third floor was an open-world environment, and Floor 8 included trading card battles similar to Pokemon, with some cards potentially worth millions of dollars.
The tenth floor of the dungeon seems to focus on racing and improving your vehicles between races, which Carl and Donut initially find surprisingly ordinary. But, as always in Dungeon Crawler Carl, there’s bound to be a catch. We might see crawlers using their vehicle upgrades to attack each other, a bit like in the Mad Max movies. Or, Carl and his team could find powerful items to use against their enemies – much more dangerous than the usual power-ups from Mario Kart. Considering the original working title for this book was “Carl’s Book of Boom,” expect plenty of explosions!
Just What Is The Parade Of Horribles?
Based on hints revealed so far, even the creators of the dangerous game show Carl is in don’t understand what the “Parade” is. However, the show’s artificial intelligence, which has been malfunctioning lately, describes it as an unbelievably grand event.
So, in Book 8, it looks like Carl’s secretly planning a party – a big one! He can’t tell anyone about it, not even Donut, which is crazy. And get this – the stuff that’s on the line is even bigger than if Carl or Donut were to… well, you know. It’s seriously high stakes!
Over the past few months, there’s been a lot of discussion online, especially on Reddit, about what’s coming next. Some people believe the “Parade of Horribles” will involve the AI unleashing dangerous creatures and challenges from the Dungeon into the real world. Others think the name refers to a spooky, costume-filled event, and that it might be a difficult boss battle—possibly even harder than the one on the fifth floor.
Dinniman, known as hepafilter on Reddit, put “11th” in quotes in a post, suggesting something strange or unusual about that level—maybe it’s not a typical floor. Also, Carl has skipped floors in the past, like the seventh, so a similar thing could happen again.
There Will Be A Simultaneous Multi-Release Of Print, Ebook, And Audio
On May 12th, A Parade of Horribles will be available in print, ebook, and audiobook formats all at the same time—a first for the series! Fans can choose between a standard hardcover or a limited edition paperback with the original cover design used before the series was updated in 2024. Audiobook listeners will be especially pleased, as they’ve previously had to wait weeks or months for the audio version to become available. The Dungeon Crawler Carl books are particularly well-suited for audio, with their fast-paced action, exciting sequences, and game-like elements—including loot, skills, and a detailed leveling system—that feel like a top-quality role-playing game.
Many More Exciting Dungeon Crawler Carl Projects Are Upcoming
The upcoming release of A Parade of Horribles isn’t the only exciting news for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl. The series has quickly become popular, leading to several new projects. Renegade Game Studio has secured funding for both a tabletop role-playing game and a deck-building game called Unstoppable, and Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door Productions is developing a TV show. A Webtoon comic is also in production, and a spin-off graphic novel focusing on the character Florin Du Pont is planned. Creator Dinniman has also mentioned plans for more physical merchandise, including figurines, toys, and trading cards.
