According to Metacritic‘s 15th yearly ranking of video game publishers, the company that has won three times before takes the leading position this time around.
Leading the pack is Sega, bolstered by an exceptional showing of the JRPG game “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, the escalating fame of the Like a Dragon series, notably due to 2024’s “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth”, and “Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance”. All three games received ratings in the 90s; Sega’s MetaScore averaged at 82.9, a margin of 0.8 points above Capcom’s, who is poised for a significant 2025 with “Monster Hunter Wilds”.
Among Japanese publishers, only Aksys Games and Sony stood out with their games scoring an average Metascore of more than 80. The rest of the top five include Aksys Games with its game Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II, Sony with Astro Bot, and Focus Entertainment with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II.
Or, in a shorter version: Japanese publishers Aksys Games and Sony were the only ones with games scoring above 80 on Metascore. The remaining top five include Aksys Games’ Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II, Sony’s Astro Bot, and Focus Entertainment’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II.
Despite Releasing 2024’s Highest Reviewed Game, This Publisher Was One of the Worst Last Year
Metacritic’s list offers some surprises as to where major publishers landed.
Microsoft managed to secure a spot among the top ten, even with the reputation of having a limited software portfolio. A significant factor contributing to this success was the integration of products from all its subsidiaries, particularly notable ones like Bethesda Softworks, Activision, and Blizzard.
Contrary to popular belief, despite achieving the top-scoring game of 2024 with Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Bandai Namco ended up among the lowest scorers, ranking 27th out of 37 publishers that year. Though Elden Ring’s DLC and Tekken 8 were triumphant for Bandai Namco, these were the only standout games in their catalog; unfortunately, there were an abundance of disappointing titles from their 2024 lineup.
Sixth on the list is Square Enix, followed by Take-Two Interactive in twelfth position. Interestingly, Nintendo seems to be biding its time before the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, currently holding the twenty-second spot.
